Court and Spark

And they are basically just nerding out about music.

They revisit albums from, oh my gosh, anywhere from I just watched them do Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark, Parliament Mothership Connection, Nina Simone at Town Hall, D'Angelo's Brown Sugar and Voodoo, Michael Jackson Off the Wall, a ton of Stevie Wonder.

Oh.

A ton of other just straight jazz artists.

Yeah, that ...

To me, it kinda reminds you of, like, how great Court and Spark was, then you have, like, Miles of Aisles or how great the jazz albums were, then you have the Shadows and Light versions.

Like, it's right on that same level of, like, just a great live album that's, it's k- really its own thing.

Mm-hmm.

Again, it is hockey season, but any season is Joni Mitchell season, so I am very excited too.

You know, and here's, you know, here's this person I'd listened to all my life.

I think I saw her live when I was eight years old on the Court and Spark tour.

Um, so it was, you know, kind of overwhelming, and she c- she came over and, um, my wife, who had, uh, didn't know what to cook.

And we had just been down to Los Angeles to this restaurant where they cook this, this dish, so we, we made that dish.

Um, and I think it's, it's because it...

Yeah, the album Court and Spark came at, at a time when I was in love.

[laughs] And, uh, I, yeah, like, uh, we would listen to this album like, I don't know, like every other morning or something.

And yeah, this, this song just, man, I don't know.

Uh, it was in S- uh, Saskatoon.

Um, and we drove up to the show, and Court and Spark was the record that was out at the time, so it was the Tom Scott Express.

And we had listened to the record already, so I was in heaven 'cause, uh...

But having said that, I was pretty young.

And we came together quite naturally and became friends.

And she sang on a couple of my records and I heard Court and Spark before it was ever on record.

I used her engineer, Henry Louis.

I introduced her to Tom Scott.

They, they would, sometimes the jazz musicians would adjust it to what they thought she was playing, but what she was actually playing was much more original.

Um, that's how you get to Court And Spark and particularly listening on The Hissing of Summer Lawns, and that music is just, it's, there's still nothing like it.

The only thing that's like it a little bit is Prince.
