But when the Kingsguard appears, led by Captain Phoebus, played by Benedict Blythe, Quasimodo is mistaken as Esmeralda's assailant and arrested.

Later that night, Pierre Gringoire wakes up in the Court of Miracles, a seedy neighborhood home to Paris's beggars.

Pierre tells Clopin he was advocating for the beggars' rights just this morning during his public demonstration, and Clopin retorts that this makes Pierre no better than the oppressive nobility, saying, "...they treat us like cattle, you make us into causes." Neither puts bread on the table.

Gringoire is nearly sentenced to hang, but Clopin invokes the law of Bohemia.

Up in the bell tower, Quasimodo brings Esmeralda food and clothing, telling her he saved her life because of the compassion she showed him when she gave him water on the pillory.

The two bond over their status as orphans, and Quasimodo reveals that he has read every book in the cathedral library, and he's even writing one of his own.

Later that night, Quasimodo visits the Court of Miracles and gives Clopin and Gringoire a stack of pamphlets exposing Esmeralda's innocence that he printed using the printing press Frollo seized 25 years ago.

After the pamphlet is circulated, the peasants call for the king to pardon Esmeralda, while the nobles call for the king to suspend the law of sanctuary and have her killed.
