Cosmic Encounter

Checkers.

Cosmic Encounter.

Chinese Checkers.

The Royal Game of Ur.

If it's like, if I...

Cosmic encounter in the battles.

A perfect example.

Do you want to explain

Feels great.

So there are some of these examples, but that's the thing.

No one has ever said Cosmic Encounter is a positive player interaction game, right? No one has ever uttered that in the history of game design, but it is.

And that's what's so frustrating to me.

Like, okay, if you attack that guy, then I agree to do this thing.

And, uh, Cosmic Encounter, my favorite board game ever, is just like-

Oh, I don't know that one

... is absolutely mad, and you can strike alliances.

You can betray people.

Cosmic Encounter.

Each one plays a, you, each of you plays a different alien race that has a crazy power.

And you-

It's kind of weird for such a simple game.

But rather like Cosmic Encounter, It's a game that demands a certain attitude, I think is probably the best way to put it, a certain approach, which isn't really clear from the rulebook.

And I did not really get it.

We did not really get it during our first play.

As I've said, I've played at least at us.

I think I played a couple of times at Aircon last year, basically, with about five, six players.

I think that Cosmic Encounter comparison earlier in the cast is kind of interesting, actually, because like you were saying there, Nate, it forces you into positions that are uncomfortable and you just have to deal with.

You have to turn over a couple of cards, you have to trade those cards with other people in order to manipulate the hand you've got, which is not ideal for you.

I went to a convention very early in my full new gamer enthusiasm.

And I sat down and got to play a game of Cosmic Encounter, which if you know Tom Vassell, like that's one of his favorite games of all time.

And I'm like, this was a thing where it's like, I don't know the rules.

I'm going in completely blind.

Had a blast.

This was fun.

I went out and got myself a copy of Cosmic Encounter.

I played it once.

If anyone walks up to him and asks him to play it, he says yes.

Uh, and that is Cosmic Encounter.

Ah, yes.

Righty-o.

Ryan, Ryan Keene, uh, gives a few, a few good answers.

He says Cosmic Encounter.

Oh, yeah.

Very foundational.

... steal something, yeah, lie to somebody else.

Crazy.

So Jake, the editor, has told me that he intends to bring Cosmic Encounter, uh, to a convention soon 'cause he wants to play it with more people.

Oh, it's, it's great.

So when it comes to specific games, I love just pitching people my favorite games.

I love playing Cosmic Encounter, what people have never played before.

I love playing Race for the Galaxy, what people have never played before.

There's a lot of games like that.

I find it a very amusing game to play in that regard.

I can't seem to find it.

Do you have a ranking of your favorite Cosmic Encounter?

So, you see, I gave this a six.

This re-implements my favorite game, Cosmic Encounter, into a Game of Thrones setting.

Now, that makes sense because Cosmic Encounter is all about negotiation, working together, backstabbing, and all kinds of stuff.

Game of Thrones fits that well.

The problem is Cosmic Encounter is wacky and, you know, everything else.

And Game of Thrones won less so.

More rules.
