What about the Coriolis effect? Well, Coriolis is a real thing.

Like, if we were on a merry-go-round and I threw a ball to you, it would curve to the side.

When I flush my toilet, the water spins.

And they're spinning in opposite directions right next to each other.

It has nothing to do with the spin of the earth.

So let me ask you a question.

The Coriolis force.

Oh, Coriolis, like the weather patterns on Earth, right?

Exactly.

Coriolis is an inertial force.

It affects objects that are in motion within a rotating reference frame.

Okay, wait.

Right, because the moon is spinning.

Someone slipping from the connection where the command and control levels met the greater chamber could fall for nearly two full kilometers.

Water systems built to take advantage of spin gravity and Coriolis stood on their sides, useless.

Well, a couple of reasons.

One is, um, I spent about the last 15 years, uh, on and off thinking about Coriolis theory.

Um, a lot of times when I have a, a puzzle in my head, I solve it by writing articles, and when I write them out, um, I find that I'm able to work through certain puzzles I, I, I just couldn't, can't resolve any other way.

Uh, the other thing is in 2003 I interviewed quite a few of the, uh, founders of thermal flow meters, uh, flow meter companies I should say, um, including Dr. Owen and, uh, Jerry Kurz and, um, Mark Eldridge and a few others, um, people on the West Coast primarily.

So I had always had the ambition of, um, doing a, a book on thermal flow meters and, um, you know, it's kind of a lot to do a whole book on thermal.

But if you pair that up with Coriolis and then add multi-variable and, um, I had mass flow controllers as well, um, you can pretty much cover the mass flow area.

Uh, the other reas- reason really is, um, the other reason is that, um, mass flow is a fundamental part of flow measurement, and if you look at mass flow and pair it up with volumetric flow, then you've pretty much covered the whole market.

The gravity was close to standard but lighter, with a lateral drift I felt in my knees when I shifted weight.

My inner ear kept disagreeing with my feet about which direction was truly down.

I crouched.

They pressed down with a weight that left ruts half a meter deep.

As it passed, the treads crushed the upper slag layer into fine powder.

A gray plume rose behind it, drifting in the Coriolis-shifted air before settling sixty meters behind it.

Behind the treads, the manipulator arms.

They got real emotional though.

I was like the Coriolis effect.

You have to factor it in with being a sniper.

And I go, you don't.

Not necessarily lie.

The lie usually comes when they cover it up.

I don't think that when people pass on information like Coriolis effect, you have to factor it in with the, with the shot.

You absolutely do not at any level.

17 years of constant input from Earth's 1G field, shaping neural pathways, tuning sensitivity thresholds, training the brain to interpret gravitational acceleration as the baseline against which all other motion is measured.

Now, imagine a child whose vestibular system develops not under 1g but under a fraction of it, or under the simulated gravity produced by a rotating habitat, which introduces a Coriolis effect that creates different sensations depending on the direction and speed of head movement.

or under no consistent gravitational pull at all, that child's vestibular system would still develop.

The genetic program would still build semicircular canals and otolith organs and vestibular neurons.

The logistical challenge of building such a structure in deep space, far from any manufacturing base, exceeds anything humanity has ever attempted.

And even if such a habitat could be built, it would not perfectly replicate Earth's gravity.

Rotation introduces the Coriolis effect, a force that acts perpendicular to the direction of motion within the rotating frame.

Walk in the direction of rotation inside a spinning habitat and you feel heavier.

Oh, that's right.
