Episode 374: Toonstruck
M
38:49MadsHOST
So they say, "Far from being just another interactive movie thing with a famous name and jerky non-interactive FMV, Toonstruck uses a combination of traditional animation, hand-painted background settings, digital animation, and state-of-the-art digital beta cam footage to bring together all the intensity and realism of live action footage with the fantastical splendor of a computer-generated player environment." Yeah.
M
39:15MadsHOST
So this is like, uh, Who Framed Roger Rabbit or Cool World, where you-

I also very much think, like, looking at Tom Cruise, I feel Tom Cruise was already too established as arrogant characters between Maverick, between Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder, and there was a role that Brad Pitt played.
A
55:24Adam KhromachouHOST
Have you ever seen Cool World?
B

I haven't seen Heavy Traffic, which is his fresh and his most fresh, and I haven't seen Cool World, which is his lowest.
M
12:25Mat BrunetGUEST
Yeah.
R
12:27Rachel WagnerHOST
So I think you have to make the call on this one.
M
13:34Mat BrunetGUEST
Rather it be discussing about race, rather it be about how things are in America, the kind of corruption that's going on, a lot of the injustices that are happening.
M
13:50Mat BrunetGUEST
And we see this a lot, not just with that, but there's also stuff like with American pop or wizards for example and Not to mention that like he kind of has two interesting styles going on where like on one hand he can go into the cartoony route that has a little bit of a similar flair not necessarily a similar design but kind of has that same vibe that you would expect from Hanna-Barbera or Or there is also the rotoscoping style where he leans very heavily on it, such as the case with something like American Pop or his Lord of the Rings movies.
M
14:29Mat BrunetGUEST
But I think when it comes to Ralph Bakshi, like overall with his works... they're like i would say that he kind of has more good than there is bad like not to say that um like they're like i'm not gonna go and put him on terrible but there are some that yeah they don't really work like cool world not a fan of it whatsoever it's like a movie that's just way too chaotic without an actual sense of uh direction that's going on but there are some however that can be very admirable like i would you
R

say campy fun would you feel like i feel like he kind of qualifies as sort of campy fun

But if I had to do the best live action and animation, it's Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and then Looney Tunes Back to Nation, and then Coyote vs. Acme.
T
6:11The VernHOST
And then if you actually want to do something out of the offset, you can go watch Cool World.

88:03Evan YeeHOST
It's like the same.
E
88:04Evan YeeHOST
Is it
E

But honestly, I think just talking about how both of these movies and their animated characters are just like tackling these real world issues is just both of them are marvels, technical marvels and marvels that they even made it to the screen in different ways.
G
89:21Gabby RuizHOST
We can just be grateful that we have them now in our lives.
