This is the classic example of why you have federal prosecutors, because the state wasn't doing anything.

And I have to honestly say, I have nothing against the Cook County State's Attorney's Office.

We dealt with those guys from time to time.

But I'll tell you, I also have to say that it was always an arm's length relationship because I didn't know who was behind them.

So Fred Hampton and the Panthers were targeted and attacked, and ultimately Hampton was assassinated as part of the COINTELPRO program, but also as a part of the prosecutor's office here in Chicago and the Chicago police's war on gangs.

Attorney Ed Hanrahan was, as you mentioned, the Cook County State's Attorney in Chicago.

Why do you write that he was the prime villain and what was his role in planning the assassination of Fred Hampton and the subsequent cover-up of that assassination?

Well, my second book, The Conviction Machine, deals with prosecutors, politicians, and police violence in Chicago.

so, very much so.

But good Lord, so many violations of the law and violations of people's rights, and it appears as though they're going to get away with it.

It's worth noting that there are some local police departments that have collected evidence of alleged misconduct by federal agents.

So Evanston comes to mind as an example, where, for example, on Halloween of last year, when federal agents were seen holding a man to the ground and punching him in the head repeatedly, we reported recently that the chief of police from Evanston wrote to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office to a particular unit that specializes in possible charges against members of law enforcement and said, we need some help determining where we can take this investigation.
