Conversion of Paul the Apostle

One, the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the other, the conversion and apostleship of the Apostle Paul.

Gilbert West said, "I'll write a book disproving the resurrection of Jesus if you, Lyttelton, will write a book disproving the factuality of the Apostle Paul's conversion." So they set off to do that.

They were a bit rusty in their facts of Christianity, as unbelievers often are, so one said to the other, "You know, if we're going to be honest about this, we really should investigate the evidence." Well, they agreed to do that, and they went off and worked on it for some time.

In our reading today, we witness one of the most remarkable accounts in the book of Acts, Saul's conversion on the road to Damascus.

Luke deliberately reminds us who Saul was before introducing the change that takes place, because Saul is the man who approved of Stephen's death, who was breathing out murderous threats against Christians, and who travelled over 130 miles to arrest and imprison them.

Hatred of the church had become the very air he breathed.

But we may readily conclude that after they had been brought to believe the gospel, some time must have elapsed before the dispute about the ceremonial law arose.

I consider, therefore, that the fourteen years are to be reckoned not from one journey to another, but from Paul's conversion.

The space of time between the two journeys was eleven years.

Differences of detail were unreal.

Similarly, he describes Paul's conversion three times, always with slight differences in detail.

Truths transcendental and divine had to be expressed in the insufficient language of mankind and made intelligible to men of that time.

It is part of Luke's intention to leave the accompaniments vague, shadowy, and uncertain in order to concentrate attention on what was real, spiritual, and certain.
