It was the highly anticipated follow-up to her multi-platinum breakthrough album, Control.

But instead of just duplicating the romance-heavy pop formula of the era, it decided to go more political with social injustice.

It also tackled racism, poverty, and also substance abuse.

To really understand what this time is doing for Janet's entire discography, it helps to go back to remember where Janet was when she made the Janet period album.

In 1986, Control was about establishing herself, her independence.

In 1989, we got Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814.

It turned her lens outward to social issues like racism and poverty and education.

This is the moment when you finally hear yourself say, nope, I am done.

Think back to those previous albums, like I said.

In 1986, On Control, she declared, this time I'm doing things my way.

And if we fast forward, in 1993, on this time, she says, this time, I'm actually walking out the door.

And I could have put several records here.

You know, I love the whole Control album.

Everything on that album is brilliant.

Her number one hit from Control is When I Think of You.

That's a phenomenal record.

My favorite track on Control is Nasty, but that only got as high as I believe number three.

And then, you know, when you get to the Rhythm Nation album, generally the track from Rhythm Nation that makes these, you know, Rolling Stone 500 lists is Rhythm Nation, the title track.

Great record.

And I remember specifically at a record store on Roosevelt Road in between Berwyn and Oak Park, Illinois, purchasing this 45 along with On My Own by Patti LaBelle and Elle DeBarge's Who's Johnny.

I bought off the Control album the 45 of Janet Jackson's What Have You Done For Me Lately.

Now, Janet wrote the song with famous producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and it was the first released single off of her multi-platinum album, Control.

And it was her very first top 40 hit.

She had a couple of others that hit top 100, but nothing that creeped into the top 40 until this one, and it went all the way up to number four and number one in the US R&B charts.

It's really, really good and holds up very well to this day.
