Constellation Brands
Constellation Brands is the largest provider of alcoholic beverages across the beer, wine, and spirits categories in the US, generating 84% of revenue from Mexican beer imports under top-selling brands such as Modelo and Corona. The rest of the business includes some remaining wine and spirits brands, categories where the company has pruned assets in recent years. With its exclusive rights tied to the Mexican beer brands, effective only in the US, the firm has limited revenue exposure to international markets. Constellation owns a 10% stake in Canopy Growth, a medicinal and recreational cannabis producer in Canada, and has a 50/50 joint venture with glass manufacturer Owens-Illinois in Mexico.www.cbrands.com

They didn't go into the, when all the big alcohol firms were consolidating their distribution footprint into one big distribution partnership, they did the opposite of that and went with a bunch of beer distributors in a bunch of different markets and said, hey, we'll put all the salespeople on our own books and we'll go out and sell these products ourselves.

These are consumer focused industries, but in reality it's B2B2C.
J
17:03Jay MenasheHOST
So it's like, what are you doing for your wholesalers? to make it worth their while? How are you helping drive foot traffic into their stores to get people to buy your products? And I think when I was walking, I was seeing all these stats about like, you know, Constellation Brands talking about their number one beer in the world.
J
17:20Jay MenasheHOST
And I didn't even understand what some of the stats meant.
J
17:22Jay MenasheHOST
But they made it front and center.

It's like, hey, we're going to have mini golf in our booth.
J
26:11Jay MenasheHOST
okay, well, how is that going to serve your overall objectives? And I know that sounds silly to be like, how is mini golf serving your objective? But again, I'm going to turn back to next because I was just there.
J
26:20Jay MenasheHOST
But like Constellation Brands had mini golf in their space.
J
26:24Jay MenasheHOST
It was tucked in the corner.

M

you know, Anheuser-Busch, Molson Coors, Constellation Brands, you know, there's five or six of them that got into the craft beer world.
M
15:47Mark RiethGUEST
And it was a timeline.
M
15:49Mark RiethGUEST
We didn't know how short that timeline was.

So Molson Coors, a brewery, owns one distributor in their network across the whole country, and it happens to be in Denver.
B
1:42Bud DunnHOST
And what happened is that in early September, Constellation sent a termination letter to CDC telling them that they were out.
B
1:53Bud DunnHOST
Like, hey, we're going to move to a different distributor.
B
1:56Bud DunnHOST
That different distributor, I think so far, is assumed Reyes.
R
2:51Ross AckermannHOST
initial reaction was like, why are we surprised?
B
2:55Bud DunnHOST
I mean, that is a good first reaction, but let me finish the review here for everybody.
B
3:00Bud DunnHOST
So what has happened since then, we're just laying the groundwork to the facts, is that what has happened since then is that CDC has filed an injunction or filed suit against Constellation, and I think they did against Mamby as well, against Mark Anthony Brands, but for sure against Constellation to try to say, hey, you can't just terminate us per...

Growth dried up.
B
18:50Bill KirkGUEST
And there are very few of those big brewers that have participated in a meaningful way in those innovation waves.
B
18:57Bill KirkGUEST
And I think we're seeing an appetite to go after it more aggressively and not miss them going forward.
J
19:03Jen Litz-KirkHOST
So you're talking about, obviously, the Spike Day deal, Constellation having bought Spike Day, which was interesting because they paid sort of a little bit up front, but then a much bigger potential price tag over five years.
J
19:16Jen Litz-KirkHOST
I wonder if that would have happened without Nick Fink at the helm, right? What are your thoughts on all of that?

J
10:47Justin KendallHOST
I can't keep track of everybody already.
J
10:49Justin KendallHOST
And so do we need more? Where does it stop? And, you know, the retailer is ultimately the one that's going to control who succeeds here, I think, because, you know, are they going to open the cooler door for everybody? There's not enough room for singles for everybody.
8 MINS LATER
