So I read Jane Eyre this summer for the second time, but I read it originally in my teens.

And Adrienne, I don't know if I've ever told you this story, but when I was in high school, when I graduated high school, The two beloved English teachers, like every American public school child, I have a beloved English teacher.

There were actually two of them.

And they took some of their favorite students and gifted them copies of novels that were supposed to be significant to that student.

This was a critique that Virginia Woolf had of the novel.

She found the closeness of the first person kind of suffocating.

So I felt like my English teachers were really telling me that I was like kind of ugly and like not going to like make it.

I have to say that that's what makes this whole exercise both charming and really tricky.
