Former National Corn Growers Association CEO John Doggett worries that as a result, lawmakers have less opportunity to hear farmers' voices.

In an interview with AgriPulse, Doggett said only around 11 members of Congress held town halls in August.

Doggett, who once worked as a staffer for former Representative Ron Marling of Montana, recalled his former boss holding almost 11 town halls in August alone during one year in the late 1980s, which he said were well attended by farmers.

Drought and farm credit were among the issues on farmers' minds at the time, he said.

Most of them were farmers, and the boss listened.

He added, we don't do that anymore.

Our members of Congress and our elected officials are communicating to us rather than with us through social media.

Doggett said farmers and ranchers want to, quote, get back to a place where agriculture has a bigger voice.

This mode of transacting business would now be thought to be most unconstitutional, and many writers, applying the standards of their own age to the transactions of a former age, have severely blamed William for acting without the advice of his ministers, and his ministers for submitting to be kept in ignorance of transactions which deeply concerned the honor of the crown and the welfare of the nation.
