Conceptualism

Nailed it.

And so when we first, like this kind of founding observation we made starting sometime in 2021, 2022, led us to provisionally title this thought experiment as slacker conceptualism.

That's actually what we wanted to call the show in the first place, Slacker Conceptualism.

But, you know, we kind of started doing the studio visit with artists that we felt should be in this exhibition.

And kind of early on, we sensed some resistance to this title for a variety of reasons.

And that was kind of, to me, or to us, a refreshing first sense of something kind of brewing in the air that wanted to break with some of the dominant paradigms in the city, which, you know, one of them could be called social practice and all of its soft shoots.

Another could be called figurative painting in the wake of always of this imagist legacy, painting and image making in particular.

And I think that seeing Max's show was perhaps one of the first times that the idea of slacker conceptualism came to mind.
