Our club is being handed the red carpet treatment with the question, does treating red carpet make it a better sound absorber? We're all set to learn about acoustics, balanced audio lines, microphone patterns, analog consoles, digital links, high-powered FM transmission, and the most important thing of all, how critical air conditioning is to a radio station.

These are just some of the skill areas that are involved in tech for broadcasting, and so many of those technologies are useful to know when you dabble with amateur radio.

Right.

Um, yeah, no, but I did have a show on 4ZZZ in Brisbane, the community radio show station, um, and it was 4:00 to 6:00 AM on a Tuesday night, Wednesday morning.

That was rough.

[laughs]

... honestly, without those hours, like, that you could just fool around, make mistakes, I wouldn't be here, that's for sure.

Um-

I mean, community radio is where I learned the ropes.

I started-

It's 104.7 and this is the show called Sex Ritual Radio and we like to talk about sexuality, spirituality, vibrant health, and I love to tap into the conversations about the taboo that we don't talk about in our society very often.

And so I like to bring them to the surface, digest them, and make them less scary and more palpable because I think that is the place for healing to be.

But that path wouldn't have existed if the station didn't play those raw recordings on tape.

So when you trace the trajectory of punk from garage riffs in a basement to national airwaves, you realize that college and community radio wasn't just a background detail.

It was the lifeline that kept punk alive beyond the club scene.

It connected disparate scenes, facilitated cross-regional tours, gave labels an avenue for discovery, and provided fans with an alternate cultural narrative outside of corporate control.
