The National Sunflower Association is offering some advice on how to reduce the risk of combine fires.

Sunflower is an oil-based crop and fine fibers from sunflower seeds pose a constant fire hazard.

To help reduce the risk this harvest season, be sure to keep a clean work area when harvesting sunflower.

Blow the combine and grain dryer set up with an air hose daily.

Real heads also vary.

In the citizen science project called Turing's Sunflowers, growers contributed sunflower heads and observations for researchers to examine.

Their measurements included familiar Fibonacci arrangements, but also spiral counts outside that sequence.

Some heads showed clear, orderly spirals without matching the expected Fibonacci numbers.

[gentle music] Our common sunflower goes by the botanical name of Helianthus annuus.

Extensive breeding has resulted in a great number of cultivars with yellow, red, orange, cream, white, and bicolor blooms in a lot of different sizes and flower shapes.

They can grow three to 10 feet tall, and so some need support.

Sunflowers track the sun while their seeds quietly mature.

In the early life of a sunflower, the head can swing from east to west each day, then back again overnight.

This movement is driven by growth differences in the stem, guided by internal timing and light.
