Common Desktop Environment

KDE was founded on October 14th, 1996 by Matthias Ettrich.

And it was originally named the Cool Desktop Environment.

Instead of a C for cool, it's the K for Cool Desktop Environment, KDE.

And it was an open alternative to the proprietary CDE or Common Desktop Environment, which was dominant on Unix workstations from Sun, HP, and IBM at the time.

And CDE was one of my favorite user interfaces as well.

But the other thing with this is this also still had a lot of the DNA of early KDE.

So this looks kinda, kinda XP sorta, but this is still taking from the, the origins of the project back when it was building off of CDE, right? Like, if you look at mod- even, like, modern KDE with the Oxygen theme, this is a very different kinda bar.

3 is when they really started to diverge and actually start to experiment with design, but 1 to 2, like, you can very s- clearly see where we're going here.

The thing is, though, if you go back to 1, this also took direct inspiration from another project.

So probably up until, I would say, KDE 3, 4 is where they really started to diverge into their own thing, but up until KDE 3, this was taking, like, pretty much its, its, like, core language from another project known as CDE, the Common Desktop Environment, and if I show you this, I, I've talked about this before, but if I show you this, you will immediately see what I'm talking about.
