Colostrum is another great one.

Colostrum has become huge.

That's like one of the original supplements

going back 60 years ago.

That's what started happening with us way, way back.

And I discovered a product called Colostrum from New Zealand that somebody had recommended.

At that time, I also discovered that for some unknown reason, our cats and dogs were easy.

They loved it anyway.

So Robin on the topic of vaccines can you share a little bit more about timing of vaccines Because I know being on label and just being cognizant of different operations That timing a vaccine no matter the age of the calf matters so Share a little bit more about proper timing of vaccines And how that impacts efficacy

Well i love that question If you think about the way vaccines work and I'm going to generalize here When we give a vaccine It doesn't work immediately It's gonna take about thirty To forty-five days Just to give For it to give us its maximum protection And then it's gon decline After that Now we do have vaccines They give lifelong immunity Or A tetanus toxoid That they claim lasts eight years or So we do have vaccines that don't Decline But a lot of the ones We use in cattle We're goin to have Maximum protection at Thirty Forty five days We start thinking Protection is maybe Starting to decline At ninety Let's start back with The marketing Of the cattle The buyer Can't vaccinate Th-The day they get 'em And have protection when he needs it Which is in the next few weeks Because they get exposed to things There So they really dependent On us Doing it And I'm gone go to the other end of the spectrum on Timing And this was Some registered bulls that went In feedlot For growing And they were About uh week or ten Days before sale Then He put them through the chute to Clean em up a Little Bit You Know Whatever they Do Trim tail switches And they're Like Oh let's Give Them another round of Vaccine They Were Well Vaccinated And then we Have Other Vaccines That Are Very Specific Because there's a window we're trying to protect My pinkeye vaccine May Really Not Work but Ninety or one hundred twenty days So if I give it in May And I Market my calves In October My Protection has Gone away At the most Critical time for me to have it which Is One One of the times where we have the Most Pink eye Two If it's at Time of Marketing it could affect Us the most The other one Where timing is really critical Is--Is in th-the Vaccines that we give the cow to Be transmitted into colostrum Uh...We can't even Accomplish that With some Things But those that we can Like the scours Viruses and bacteria We need That Cow at Maximum Amount of antibodies So that it will Even spill Into the Colostrum So there's Products out there That have got To be given Within six Weeks of Calving Which that's an issue You know within Within Six weeks on a herd means you're putting Heavies Through the Chute Which none of US like to do If you were also calving early fall that Means you're doing that on a hot Day Which creates a whole other Issue S-so where Your vaccinations Could cause Harm If you try to give Em earlier than they Don't work Elanco scour boss vaccine Got the longest Labeled pre-calving Administration Up to Ten weeks And that's still Putting us pretty Close t-to calvin isn't it That's only two and half months in front of Calvin But that's a Lot easier for usto accomplish Especially on a Herd that may Calve over fourty Five or sixty days Some of the products Its SO hard to Get that colostral Immunity tha-that they're really NOT effective FOR THE WHOLE HERD Read Those labels AND Understand what SOME OF THAT THOSE THINGS MEAN IF IT TELLS YOU TO GIVE A PRODUCT AND THEN Booster it IN A certain Number of DAYS IN A Window If you DON'T DO THAT ITS PROBABLY NOT GONNA WORK AS WELL And if it simply says ON THE LABEL And it usually BE ONE OF THE LAST LINES It'll say revaccinate annually That Doesn't mean it works a year So you probably REALLY SHOULD HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH YOUR VETERINARIAN You know THESE ARE MY TYPICAL CATTLE HANDLING TIMES What do WE NEED TO BE protecting for WHAT IS THE realistic WINDOW THAT OF PROTECTION THAT THOSE PRODUCTS CAN GIVE ME And make sure that we're JUST LIKE Like A lotta herds are And This is Honest The lowest Managed Herds Gather Their Animals Once a Year Cause THEY HAVE T0 To sort off the calves to Sale And sO IF YOU LOOK AT MOST PEOPLES PROTOCOL Maybe one from An extension service It's Going to have EM giving every product At the TIME that they wean the CALVES BECAUSE THATS THE ONLY TIME THAT PEOPLE HAVE THE COWS CAUGHT That's not what a Good Manager ANd like Particularly a GOOD Fall Calving manager That's not the Way they Probably Need to be doing things Because theres some of those vACCINES That are TIMING sensitive That are Gonna need to be Given at OTHER Times And for example In that Scenario I just gave you If theyre weaning at Eight Months old Then they're Four months In Front of calving aren't they So it's ahundred and Twenty Days they would be asking a Product to work If they were Trying to GET IT TO GO INTO COLUSTRUM If they WERE TRYING TO GET IT PROTECT DURING BREEDING NEXT YEAR You KNOW During The breeding season They Would be Asking a product to Work nine OR TEN MONTHS AWAY NOW WE PUT ON TOP OF THAT That MAYBE THEIR timings wrong FROM MOTHER NATURE And THE ANIMALS ARE WEATHER STRESSED THAT DAY THAT YOU'RE WORKING THEM either HOT OR Cold They're Nutritional stress Cuz nutritional quality's declining So now they dont respond to the vaccine as well Because of weather Because of nutrition And we were already AskIng it to work longer Than it's been proved to work And so thats a recipe for Having alot of motion around Vaccination in my herd Alot of product purchases And feeling secure When really I didn't have all the pieces in the right time and the Right Place for it to really work for Me

So from my experience, and flies depend on the year, but some years we have challenges with flies on those newborn calves.
