Collins-class submarine

His brother Stephen played as well.

He works on the Collins Submarines, weaponry around the world.

His resume is unbelievable, but he's actually an atomic physicist.

Wow.

Now, why did we want to get it? Well, if I cast my mind back to that moment when AUKUS was announced, in the lead up to that, submarine discussions have been very big in Australia.

You know, the Collins class submarines we currently have were getting old.

And of course, the French submarine deal was in place to build the largest ever conventional submarine in the world.

Now, what we knew about that program from media reports and from things coming out of the Department of Defense is the Australian government was very unhappy with the development of the French-Australian designed attack class submarine.

And part of the problem is my logic was always, and Peter just mentioned this, this argument for allied scale, right? The idea that the US and Australia should be operating a smaller number of systems that are very advanced, but operating them, if not together, at least in parallel, right? So that we can decrease the cost and increase the number of systems that we have out in the water.

That's a strong argument.

But the second I saw the optimal pathway and saw, wait, so now Australia's going to be operating Collins class plus Virginia class plus AUKUS class down the line.

This is really, really complicated.
