Guitarist Graham Lewis had recently been joined by Bruce Gilbert, who brought an avant-garde sensibility to the guitar work.

Colin Newman, meanwhile, had taken on more vocal responsibility, which meant he had to navigate the challenge of conveying complex emotional content within short timeframes.

The drummer Robert Gotobed had a style that leaned toward minimal yet driving rhythms.

He kept the band grounded by not overplaying and instead focusing on tightness.

In London, the band Wire pushed punk into intellectual territory with their nineteen seventy-nine debut Pink Flag.

Lead singer Colin Newman wrote cryptic lyrics that echoed political pamphlets more than catchy slogans.

Their guitarist, Bruce Gilbert, employed feedback loops and tape manipulation to create abstract sonic textures.

Wire's minimal yet cerebral approach convinced many that punk could be an art form in its own right.

It was just '50s rock songs sped up." I think they were also annoyed, as we have been annoyed, so we have to align ourselves to a certain extent with them.

Another choice quote from Colin Newman, who's the singer.

He says, "In spite of its radical posture, punk's revolution was generally quite limited.

Sure, it took down some easy targets like fatuous pop or dino rockers, but it left unchallenged or even reproduced other retrograde, irrelevant music." So amidst that, I saw people that were actively trying to play against tropes of a genre that was popular at the time that was happening.

Charismatic.

And charismatic, exactly.

And Colin Newman i, is a lot of things.

Uh, he's a very much an art school guy, and I, and I mean that both complimentary and derogatory, right? But-
