Coldwater

It was a quiet Easter Sunday in 1990.

Ray and Marie Thornton were out on their usual drive along Snow Prairie Road, a rural highway about 12 miles outside of Coldwater, Michigan.

But their quiet routine was shattered when, in the rearview mirror, they noticed a speeding van approaching them from behind.

It closed the distance within moments and shot past their car.

When Ray checked the mirror again, the van was back, right behind them again, closing in fast.

Behind the wheel of the white van was a man named Dennis Depew.

He was married to a woman named Marilyn, a well-respected high school counselor in Coldwater, Michigan.

The couple had three children, two girls and a boy.

Most people work at 2:00 on a Friday.

But most people are working on 2:00 on a Friday, right? And it's in our town instead of in Coldwater where we're playing.

Yeah.

had a real bad ride at Coldwater, Michigan.

We pulled in late October and it was spitting snow and the track got a little damp.

And they had an enormous memorial service for him on Sunday, September 16th at the Wigwam in Chicago, which was this rustic convention center where in May of 1860, the Republican National Convention had nominated Abraham Lincoln for president.

His After the memorial service, his body was taken by train to his home in Coldwater, Michigan, where he was buried.

He was survived by his wife Harriet, 15-year-old daughter Mary, 12-year-old son Robert, who unfortunately died a year later from drowning.

And he also had an 11-year-old daughter named Josephine who was crippled.

But Beth, you also, when you were doing your research, you went back to some of the cities where these people lived or some activity occurred that you wanted to be sure it was accurate, right?

Yes, that's correct.

Interestingly enough, I mentioned going to Winneka and Evanston, but I also went to Coldwater, Michigan, which was the home of Captain Jack Wilson.

And I went to the historical room of the library and asked the librarian what they had on Captain Jack Wilson.

Beginning of the movie is partially based upon a real experience of Ray and Marie Thornton while driving on Snow Prairie Road near Coldwater, Michigan.

While driving, a van appeared in the rearview mirror, driving aggressively and ultimately passing them.

They made a note of the license plate number, which started with GZ and remarked, geez, he's in a hurry.
