Coffin Moon

When this one came through, another author I had not read, Keith Rawson, I was like, don't know much about him.

I know you read Coffin Moon, but this would have, you know, I had no frame of reference for him.

And then I just saw a bunch of folks start talking about it in our Discord.

And they were saying, oh, you know, it's really good.

Highly recommend it.

This one's Crone by Keith Rawson.

That seems like kind of a theme for him because with the father-daughter thing, because with Coffin Moon, it's a found father-daughter relationship kind of like.

Oh, okay.

Spooky season.

Keith Rosson is the author of the novels, Crone, Coffin Moon, The Devil by Name, Fever House, Smoke City, Road 7, and The Mercy of the Tide, as well as the Shirley Jackson award-winning story collection, Folk Songs for Trauma Surgeons.

His short fiction has appeared in Southwest Review, Nightmare, Cream City Review, and more.

He lives in Portland, Oregon.

We are thrilled he's here to speak with Tom, our producer and also the leader of our Weird Fiction Book Club.

So I just read Back to Back, Coffin Moon and Crone, and I'm totally hooked.

I am now a wire head for your bibliography.

Thank you so much.

We'll get to that in a second, but first, my guest today is Keith Rosson.

He is the author of the novels Coffin Moon, The Devil by Name, Fever House, Smoke City, Road Seven, and The Mercy of the Tide.

He also wrote the Shirley Jackson Award-winning story collection, Folk Songs for Trauma Surgeons.

His short fiction has appeared in Southwest Review, Nightmare, Cream City Review, Pank, December, and more.

Mm-hmm.

So a lot of it is, like...

I don't think necessarily Crone was quite as bad, but I know Coffin Moon, I turned that book in, and I was high on Fever House and, like, you know, I was a total badass and all this, and she got back to me and she's like, "There's a book here."

[laughs]

Our reading guides today are librarian Sammy Pearson, bookstore owner Megan Isser, and JPR's own Heather Holben, who coordinates our audience services and is a recent graduate of SOU.

Heather, tell me about the book Coffin Moon.

Sure.

So Keith Rawson is the author, and he actually just came to the Jackson County Library, and I got to meet him for an author talk.

Yep.

Okay.

And that's Cough and Moon by Keith Rawson.

Well, Sammy, you have a horror novel that's building on the success of a previous one, Back for Blood, Never Whistle at Night, Part Two by Shane Hawk.

Ooh.

And that's an author who... 'Cause I had the same experience with Coffin Moon, which I see there.

Coffin Moon is, is his vampire book.

Crone is his witch book.

And k- what he does so well is write these gritty, grounded crime thrillers and then introduces this supernatural horror in such a way that it feels so real, and I...

line.

Paramount Television Studios is developing and adapting Keith Rosen's horror novel Coffin Moon for TV with Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple's Iron Ocean.

Coffin Moon is set during a brutal winter in 1975 Oregon and follows a veteran and her adopted niece as they hunt and are hunted by the vampire that slaughtered their family.

That it?

... what is on my brain today-

Was it Coffin Moon?

Yeah, Coffin Moon.

Oh.

Yeah.

Well,

they just announced that Coffin Moon is getting made into – Paramount

Show.
