Coach Beard

I don't know, maybe you want to start caring about people on the news, but I think that if you're like, you know, the world is tough enough.

Do we really want there to be a very special episode where Coach Beard kills himself or something? Probably not.

Well, that's our ethos here, is that we don't want to turn off our brains when we're consuming, dare I say that word, when we're taking in a show or a book or a movie, but here we do shows.

I do like when this show, Ted Lasso, has a through line, and they can be really obvious, but I like that.

Yeah.

D-A-E-D-G-E.

And then the continuation of him being on the field again and still puzzling with it and Beard being like, you're a visual learner.

It's like strength and

I think it's so important.

but to not even ask right to show no genuine curiosity another person that to me is just like oh my god it's painful and it's boring and I'm not interested and I don't want to waste time you know and I've had girlfriends who have told me that you know some of their other friendships have ended because the person that they would go to spend time with they'd be together for like three hours and it would be in the last minute or at all that the other person would realize oh I didn't even ask you about yourself or like, how are you doing? Or like, whatever, you know, we've all been there.

We've all experienced it.

And in fairness, there have been times maybe, you know, when you're going through something in your own life, when you become super focused, you become hyper self-focused.

[laughs] He was, he was staying roofied.

[laughs] I feel like, if anybody watches Ted Lasso, I feel like, uh, [laughs] Kevin had a Coach Beard night, one of those nights where it's...

[laughs]

Yeah.

And then he didn't come out for, like, 45 minutes.

Right.

[laughs] He had a Coach Beard night.

Well, there was also a, um, uh-

But the first episode, they just go to Kansas to try and recruit Ted back.

So that episode is kind of just like, Do you know those episodes of Coach Beard? It's a new

pilot.

It's a new pilot.

Yeah.

It's basically, for me, it felt like those episodes, there's one each season of Coach Beard going off on the rails.

And it's like a completely separate episode to what's going on with everything else.

It's that.

They all look like they can get minutes.

I think Coach Beard and his staff have done a great job.

Brian Berg moved into the GM role and from my perception, just in the ideal job for him and how he works.

Unbelievably strategic, creative.

You, you brought in 41 newcomers this year, 21 of them transfers.

How do you blend that many personalities into a championship locker room?

Because they gonna be better fathers, they gonna be better husbands, they gonna be better leaders in this community because of the time that they had and their journey here at South Carolina State University.

I love it.

One of my

favorite moments with him was when he was talking to Coach Beard.

Well, he was talking to all the coaches, but he was talking about Zaba.

And, you know, Zaba's supposed to be this, like, new... diva soccer player that joins them this season, helps him get to the top, but then abandons them as he retires mid season.

And he was like really good and everything, but like, don't you think it's a bit much? And he kind of goes off and coach beard is like, It's a little ironic coming from you, don't you think, Jamie? And my favorite part is when he goes, oh, I was being hypocritical.

Not ironic.

And that just highlighted for me his growth because he comes to show up that not only is he fully aware that he is being hypocritical when he says this about Zava, but he also is totally correcting the intellectual character, Coach Beard, on it's not irony, it's hypocrite.
