I've had plenty of white women say to me, you know, That they were able to relate to elements of the single mother experience that's portrayed here and that is discussed in ways that we don't often see in popular culture.

You talked about Black excellence and it made me think about some of the ways the Cosby show and the sort of Huxtables loom, particularly in your childhood and thinking about it, comparing your own experience.

both your own family unit and then also the family units of friends of yours and then the kind of, again, the intense iconography of the Huxtables, which was, you know, I'll even say for myself, like a white kid growing up in the Bronx was also, like we watched that every week too.

That was, you know, I mean, I think it obviously had a very different way that it was refracted through, I think, black households.

But even as a white kid in the Bronx in the 80s, like that family really was iconic.

I didn't watch, this was during my time period when I didn't watch a lot of Like I mentioned, I kind of grew out of sitcoms for the most part.

But The Cosby Show with the Huxtables.

If I did watch a sitcom, it was probably a few minutes of The Cosby Show.

Mama's want the plan.

I thought I lived like the Huxtables.

And I won't live right right now.

I'm real comfortable.

And frankly, I think we're all thinking it.

It was Heathcliff Huxtable.

But obviously, what it takes to play such an important role role model and actually the last podcast that came out Paul Scheer who we talked to had a great story about meeting Bill Cosby in person which was terrifying and he sounded like an absolute monster and that was in 91 so anyway none of that is real clearly Heathcliff Huxtable is not real and we need to figure out what is All right, here's the problem we're going to deal with today.

It's a problem that age old, at least since the 90s, maybe the 70s, 1900s.

How is a dad supposed to be act? What are they supposed to do? How do you be a father? And we need some help with that.

I was determined to replace it with an idyllic 1980s sitcom, circa a Cosby show, family ties, growing pains, childhood.

If the Huxtables could figure out family conflict in 22 minutes and then live happily ever after, I could too.

Turns out homeschooling is no panacea for the brokenhearted.

And it's also no panacea for those who had a predictable, occasionally annoying, disappointing, or frustrating, or mixed experience childhood.
