Cleopas

It's a short one.

"Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.

Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, 'Woman, this is your son.' Then to the disciple he said, 'This is your mother.' And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home." So the context here, of course, Jesus is being crucified.

This is in the crucifixion narrative.

And scholars have pointed out that this is beginning to fulfill what Jesus said earlier in the Gospel about, "When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself." He said that in chapter 12, and it's interesting, isn't it? Now he's being lifted up from the earth, and people are being drawn to the foot of the cross.

And then we have a list of people who are at the foot of the cross.

So it's his mother and his mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.

So let's start with his mother.

But their eyes were holding that they should not know him.

And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that you have one to another as you walk and are sad? And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering, said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass here in these days? And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Yahshua of Nazareth, which was a prophet, mighty indeed, and word before Yahweh and all the people.

And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.

But we trusted it had been he which should have redeemed Israel.

And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass? there in these days and he said unto them what things and they said unto him concerning yashua of nazareth which was a prophet mighty indeed and word before elohim and all the people and how the chief priest and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death and have crucified him But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel.

And beside all this, today is the third day since these things were done.

They trusted that.

And he said to them, what is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk? And they stood still looking sad.

Then one of them named Cleopas answered him, Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days? And he said to them, What things? And they said to him concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death and crucified him.

but we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel.

Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.

He asked them, "What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?" They stopped short, sadness written across their faces.

Then one of them, Cleopas, replied, "You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn't heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days." "What things?" Jesus asked.

I love Jesus.

"The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth," they said.

And he said to them, what are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking? And they stood still, looking sad.

One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to him, Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days? And he said to them, What things? And they said to him, The things about Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to the sentence of death and crucified him, But we were hoping that it was he who was going to redeem Israel.

Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened.

But also some women among us amazed us.
