He lived in Abilene, and sometime I would go that way, the backyard, to go over there.

A farmer outside Cleburne, Texas noticed the birds first, vultures circling low over the wooded edge of his property.

On December 11, 1972, after a few days of noticing these birds, he went to check.

What he found among the trees wasn't a coyote or a deer carcass.

During a forensic examination, two wounds were determined to have been inflicted by a .25 caliber weapon.

Notably, no spent shell casings were found at the scene, which told investigators that the victim almost certainly hadn't been shot where he was found.

Someone had eliminated this man somewhere else, transported his body to this remote stretch of farmland northwest of Cleburne, and left him in the trees.

The location was roughly 14 miles outside of town, far enough from any main road to avoid notice.
