Andrej Petrovic is a specialist in Greek literature, epigraphy, and religion.

Born in Yugoslavia and trained in Serbia and Germany, he held academic positions in Munich, Heidelberg, and Durham before becoming professor of classics at the University of Virginia.

He edits Greece and Rome and serves as president-elect of the American Society for Greek and Latin Epigraphy.

He has published books on Simonidean verse inscriptions, co-authored together with Ivana Petrovic, Inner Purity and Pollution in Greek Religion, and written some 50 articles on archaic and classical epigram, Greek religion, epigraphy, and textual materiality.

But to do that we need to go back in time to a period before Trajan when Domitian was in charge of Rome.

After the sudden death of his brother Titus, Domitian became emperor in September 81 CE, at the young age of 29 years old, remaining so until 96 CE.

This was a big summer for classics.

We got to see Tom Hiddleston recreate The Last Day Before the Destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum in the three-part National Geographic special Pompeii Out of Time.

Here's a fun fact.

As an undergraduate reading classics at Cambridge, Hiddleston studied Greek with my own graduate advisor.

But what really won the summer was Christopher Nolan's much-anticipated Odyssey, the biggest global film event in a long, long time, and now the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

Odyssey translations started flying off the shelves, the memes and the reels came thick and fast, and every classicist out there seemed to have a take.

I don't know about you, but all of a sudden I found myself getting texts from friends I hadn't heard from in a while, asking what I thought of the film and of that review of it.
