She was determined to spread interest in the classics as widely as possible, working with schools and charities to encourage students to take up the subject.

Professor Easterling became president of the Classical Association in 1989, was elected a fellow of the British Academy, and was appointed the Regius Professor of Greek at the University of Cambridge, the first and so far only woman to hold that position.

It was there that she met a young student called Mary Beard, now an eminent classicist and broadcaster herself.

I first met Pat when I went for my interview to read classics at Cambridge in what must have been the end of 1972, and she was one of the people who interviewed me.
