Class Clown

That bit from Carlin's 1972 album Class Clown was played on WBAI radio in New York in 1973.

A complaint was filed against the radio station, and the Federal Communications Commission, the FCC, issued a declaration backing the complaint, holding the radio station accountable.

The complaint was filed in court, and it went all the way to the Supreme Court, where it was found that, yes, under no circumstance does the government want you to say the words ass, balls, cocksucker, cunt, fuck, motherfucker, piss, shit, and tits on its airwaves.

Yeah.

Oh, sorry, George Carlin had the bit Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television from his 1972 album Class Clown, and I finally listened to the Excuse Me bit from the Steve Martin album Let's Get Small, and I feel like I'm gonna become a f- comedy villain again.

I slandered Adam Sandler.

It feels like you had to be there-

So there's some sort of gear or engine there that is the performer's engine, but I don't really know what the conditions are that make somebody funny.

I think for the most part, uh it's an inherent gift that makes you funny and you learn pretty early on in elementary school and in high school you're not necessarily the class clown but you do realize that when you speak people have a tendency to laugh whereas when other people speak nobody laughs.

And so you figure that out pretty quickly.

And you always have this inkling in the back of your mind before you try standup that maybe I could do that, but I don't know.

George Carlin and a guy named Franklin Ajay that he put out comedy records by.

But these are the records that define George Carlin for us.

Class Clown, AM FM, and of course later the famous Seven Dirty Words case is based on one of those little David releases being played over the air on the radio.

So it's really, without those records...
