Clarence E. Mulford

In 1935, he assumed the iconic role of Hopalong Cassidy, having first been offered a supporting role.

Boyd changed Clarence Mulford's rough-edged character into a teetotaling cowboy hero that was an immediate hit.

The Hopalong Cassidy film series ran until 1948 for a total of 66 films.

Believing in the future of the new medium of television, Boyd spent over $350,000 to purchase the rights of the character, the books, and the films, which he then offered to TV, becoming extremely popular with all ages of viewers.

Broadcast February 5th, 1950, the program came to Mutual under the sponsorship of General Foods.

The Hop Along Cassidy character was created by Clarence E. Mulford.

The series was directed by Ted Bliss.
