Claire Duffy of CNN reports that NVIDIA announced on Thursday, yesterday, they will buy artificial intelligence startup Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, a massive bet by the chipmaker to expand the reach of open source AI technology.

Hugging Face, a service for hosting and accessing open source AI models and data sets, has been in the spotlight recently after it was hacked by open AI models that went rogue during a testing incident.

The company has also been at the center of an industry debate over whether access to advanced AI technology should be available openly or whether it should be, quoting, closed here, like popular models from open AI and Anthropic, and restricted to prevent misuse.

So Claire, this is interesting considering that Hugging Face turned down Nvidia's previous deal last year.

If you've followed tech news at all in the past few weeks, you've probably seen headlines about AI models going rogue, breaking out of their digital testing labs and conducting hacks in ways that surprised even leaders at top AI companies.

This all started last month when OpenAI reported that two of its top models escaped their testing environment, accessed the open internet, stole login credentials, and hacked into another company, the AI model repository Hugging Face, in an effort to figure out how to solve a task.
