Diallo RiddleHOST
think it was probably rap city yeah You know, a lot of people know Yo MTV Raps, but Rap City was BET's daily rap show.
Diallo RiddleHOST
I know it sounds corny, but we would get so excited the very first time we would see, like, a brand-new hip-hop song from, like, P-Rock and CL Smooth, Gangstar, Black Moon, Black Sheep.
Diallo RiddleHOST
Like, this is the early 90s.
Diallo RiddleHOST
Oh, it's
20 MINS LATER
Diallo RiddleHOST
Like, everybody talks about the drop in, like, electronic music, but the way he brings in his drums, they're always, like, an epic moment in the song.
Diallo RiddleHOST
Absolutely.
Diallo RiddleHOST
Can I play a song, another Pete Rock and CL Smooth song that I feel like, sort of like that, like, this is Troy, this is amazing.
Diallo RiddleHOST
He also did a song, I've Gotta Love, which I feel like he brings in the drums in a really cool way.
Pete RockSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
I come to make a hit.
Pete RockSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
I usually bust scratches for my brother, CL Smooth, but I decided to get wrecked on this groove.
Pete RockSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
As I provide this slide, you're going on a ride.
Pete RockSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
I know the weather's nice.
Pete RockSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
There's no need to play the outside.
Pete RockSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
Guess who's on the flyer? The man of your desire.
Pete RockSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
Pete Rock and CL Smooth, all the honey dips admire.
Pete RockSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
Beat to rough and rugged, Pete Rock is the creator.

if you had to put a number on it, it's definitely a top 20, maybe top 10 song in hip hop of all time, depending on who you ask, right? But yeah, the sentiment behind it was there.
12 KyleGUEST
And then once we saw the video, because like you said, it's about CL Smooth's life, but they're also dedicating it to T-Roy and his memory.
12 KyleGUEST
And you realize in hearing the stories later on, because again, folks, we didn't have the internet.
12 KyleGUEST
So I mean, excuse me, Pete Rock and CL Smooth are telling their story through this song.
12 KyleGUEST
And then once we got a chance to hear them talk about who Troy Dixon was as a young man, especially Heavy D when he got a chance to talk about him, definitely humanized him, you know, because we thought we knew who Trouble T. Roy was, but we got to learn a lot about Troy Dixon, the young man.
12 KyleGUEST
And I think that was special.
Pat SherwoodHOST
Top three to five songs or bands you would want on your next workout playlist.
Pat SherwoodHOST
man you know i don't okay so this is just off the top of my head um uh this i've got a very wide taste i mean one of my favorite songs in the world is um the moonlight sonata you know by beethoven i think it's i think it's uh fantastic um but then i also really like you know They Reminisce Over You by Pete Rock and CL Smooth.
Pat SherwoodHOST
So there's a little bit of a divergence there.
Pat SherwoodHOST
So I would say it would probably be 80s and 90s rap.
Pat SherwoodHOST
Again, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Gangstar, Eric B. and Rakim, KRS-One, Tribe Called Quest.
Pat SherwoodHOST
You know, that kind of Wu-Tang Clan, you know, that kind of stuff.
Pat SherwoodHOST
You just can't go wrong.
Justin JacksonHOST
You guys see me on the Sports Joint YouTube show.
Justin JacksonHOST

Justin JacksonHOST

Justin JacksonHOST
But let's get into it.
IvyGUEST
That's where having a big collaborative thing is likeness, and it makes more cohesive.
IvyGUEST
Not everybody can be a Pete Rock and CL Smooth.
IvyGUEST
Not everybody could be DJ Premier and Nas.
IvyGUEST
It's, and sometimes quite frankly, it can get kind of boring if you're just locked in with only one person, especially somebody who's, we're talking about experience, nigga.
Charlie HardingHOST
There was a great dispute between sort of the older hip hop heads hating mumble rap.
Charlie HardingHOST
You might know the artists Pete Rock and CL Smooth, their track They Reminisce Over You, Troy, from 1992, for example.
speaker_7SOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
I reminisce for a spell, or shall I say think back.
speaker_7SOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
22 years ago to keep it on track.
Chris WilliamsHOST
[upbeat music] Nice and, uh, Pete Rock.
Jason RobertsPANELIST

Chris WilliamsHOST
Pete Rock and CL Smooth at number 14.
Everett WilliamsPANELIST
I'm gonna call tentacles on this one.
Jason RobertsPANELIST
Yeah.
Kaelin EllisGUEST
So it put in my mind, if I wanna know how to do this, I gotta know who they are.
Kaelin EllisGUEST
And so the soundtrack, I learned about Pete Rock and CL Smooth, I learned about all those guys, and then you take that same technology and apply it to SSX 3.
Chris BarkerHOST
Yeah.
Kaelin EllisGUEST
And that's where the electronic side of my mind started to kind of like, that was when it started to snowball.
