City Tavern

Congress, eager to move to the next problem, turned the matter over to George Washington.

Lafayette had his first chance of meeting the American leader on August 1, 1777 at the City Tavern in Philadelphia.

There Lafayette mingled with other American officers and elites and was able to introduce himself to the commander.

The meeting was quite successful as Lafayette was able to impress the older Virginian planter with his sincerity and devotion to the American cause.
