A Crystal Age by W. H. Hudson treats the far future as an idealistic, contented, hive-like society.

She is a massive domed city-state of three hundred million inhabitants which wages a perpetual war with the outer world.

The autocratic and highly segregated city's government is completely unknown to the world's federation.

A young chemical engineer makes his way into Berlin through her potash mines where he assumes the person of a citizen of that city and emerges into the upper levels of the city of endless night.

By perfecting chemical apparatus unknown to the city, he achieves a measure of importance.
