I went to the LARGEST networking event in the world!
N
8:29Network ChuckHOST
It was that year that Susie Wee took the stage and told us that we are all now developers, which scared me to death.
N

In 2019, they refreshed all their certifications, announcing the DevNet track.
N

And then something happened in 2020 and there was no conference, virtual only.
N

They had massive numbers, but it wasn't that in-person experience that people were used to.
I'm going to Cisco Live!!! - CiscoLIVE 2018 Orlando
N
3:21Network ChuckHOST
There's a whole bunch of industry terms that I hope I can help unpack for you.
N
3:25Network ChuckHOST
If you've heard of Cisco DevNet, that's their whole push.
N
3:29Network ChuckHOST
DevNet, that's their push to get network engineers to start programming, and also programmers to start programming things for network engineers, for networks.
N
3:40Network ChuckHOST
But the whole thing is, Network engineers, Cisco wants you to start learning programming.

There's things like DevOps, and then there's NetDevOps, which is network DevOps.
HOW to Start Coding (RIGHT NOW!) as a Network Engineer - ICND1 | CCNA CCNP and Intent-Based Networking
H
7:22Hank PrestonGUEST
My entire job description is learn about cool technology, figure it out, and then go tell people about it.
H
7:27Hank PrestonGUEST
Because as a developer evangelist in DevNet, we're trying to help network engineers make this transition towards automation.
H
7:34Hank PrestonGUEST
The goal is to kind of take the skill sets that we've built up around networking, so fundamentals of layer two, layer three concepts, and then figure out how does automation fit in? How do we actually get practical SDN concepts through? Where is the crossroads between DevOps and networking, which has been my big focus these days around this NetDevOps concept of taking the best practices and culture and ideas from the DevOps transition from software developers and applying it to network engineering? So

for guys like me,
6 MINS LATER
C
14:34ChuckHOST
Let's do that.
C
14:34ChuckHOST
It's free.
C
14:35ChuckHOST
It's on DevNet, so you have to go in and create your account, which you should already have that, developer.sysco.com. Go on there, and let's take the Network Programmability Basics course from Hank Preston.
C
14:45ChuckHOST
Let's go in there and let's, let's become familiar with Python and Yang and all the other stuff.
Why Failing an IT Certification Is Actually Progress.
M

And then we think about not just the CCNP.
M
7:55MikeHOST
Around that time also I took the DevNet certification.
M
8:01MikeHOST
Now, a lot of people may say that, okay, you just, I'm taking a lot of certifications here, but basically they wasn't all in the same timeframe.
M
8:08MikeHOST
At first, I came up with the smart idea that, okay, for DevNet I'm gonna study, I'm gonna study Python.
M
8:15MikeHOST
I'm gonna get that certification 'cause they have one, but I don't think it's...
M
8:19MikeHOST
I'm not sure how valuable it is in the workforce, but Python do have certifications.
M
8:24MikeHOST
I was like, "Okay, I'm gonna get this Python certification, then I'm gonna go get a Linux certification, then I'm gonna go and get DevNet." Because basically inside of DevNet it basically utilizes a lot of Python and Linux.
M
8:36MikeHOST
So my smart idea was, "Okay, I'm gonna study for these, get these two first, then I'm gonna go and tackle this last one." So I started down that path and realized that th- this is too much because sometimes I would do Python then, you know, I might go over to Linux, and then I still might dabble a little bit with DevNet.
