Cinema Nova

Just for, you know, stuff that I do.

And then I've always wanted to go to Cinema Nova and I was going to see Chronology of Water, but...

I wasn't happy with the time.

It meant like either I couldn't do lunch.

So I got to do that.

Me and three fucking sickos at the 9.15 p.m. Sunday session.

Now, Cinema Nova is known for their chalk tops.

So when a movie comes out- Yes, they do like crazy ones.

He's a really fascinating person.

And Cinemanova jumped on the opportunity to have him in to play the original film and then talk to him about it afterwards.

And I think...

After watching the film in a room full of people who were obviously very excited to watch it again on the big screen, and then having Griffin Dunn there, I can't remember the moderator for the Q&A, but they were excellent.

And in many instances, the only chance to see those films, so many of these independent films now that used to have a regular independent theatrical circuit, now are limited to around sort of 60 screens in Australia.

Here in Melbourne, of course, Cinema Nova and the Lido are the most notable, but that's a small percentage of the total number of screens.

And yeah, the festivals become the site in which you can actually see really interesting curated work.

And have festivals become more competitive in actually getting your films into them? Yes.

And I'm pleased to say that Women in Film and TV Victoria is still going strong and after all of those years.

It's still very much a networking organisation for emerging and mid-career women.

So later in my career, I thought, well, there's a group of us thinking, well, what's happening for women who are mid-career trying to proceed into executive or into leadership roles? Why are they consistently getting blocked? Why is there only one woman who owns cinema in australia why are there so few women distributors why are all the films year in year out seem to be male focused because the programmers and the distributors are largely men so we decided we'd set up the natalie miller fellowship which was really a in honor of natalie miller who from shamal films and cinema nova who was the only woman in this country still remains the same after all these years, even though Natalie's now in her 80s.

We would do it in honour of her, her namesake.

Um, which feels like it was ages ago now.

We, we went to Nova Cinema and saw the wonderful Lazy Susan-

It wasn't said to someone over here who wrote a story about it and that guy read it and then that guy read that story and then someone wrote a blog about it and someone linked it in the blog and then someone wrote a musical about it and then for some reason I was at the Cinema Nova on a Wednesday at around 10.30 watching it thinking, oh, I'll put that in the show.

I'll be honest, I was not cool.

And there's quite a variance.

I've been to Cinema Nova, right? Yeah.

And there's one cinema in there where the back row is the worst place you could possibly sit.

And you could honestly sit in the front and it would be fine.
