We last talked about director Sergio Martino and actor Edwidge Fennec when we covered their first giallo film together, The Strange Vice of Mrs Ward, back in episode 56.

Like, I think he's amazing.

And I will tell you, there was a Cinefantastique article that preceded Jason Gostel coming out, like, by a month.

And Mike DeLuca... who was one of my two executives on the film, Mike DeLuca and Mark Odesky.

You couldn't get better executives.

Right.

So it's like, you found like an image this tiny from a Cinefantastique and that's what you had to work with.

And basically, well, that's what I remember the mask looking like.

And then the director's like, I don't like the nose or whatever it was.

[upbeat music] [audience cheering] Uh, this, this it? One of my absolute favorite people.

I, I, I've known him for so many years since I was writing for Cinefantastique, and he was a young, aspiring writer who just sold his first spec script.

He's gone on to-- I, I always knew he would amount to something, but I never imagined that he would be the dominant force in our industry.

He is such a talent, but more importantly, he is a mensch of the first order.

Development started on the 1999 film in 1987. with a story by Abby Bernstein and George Romero attached to direct in a story about a ruthless, unstoppable undead monster inspired by the Terminator who wanted to use an alchemical weapon to turn the oceans to acid and destroy all life on Earth.

That version fell apart when Romero walked away, but in 1990 Clive Barker wrote a treatment that was developed into a full screenplay by Mick Garris, but unsurprisingly that wound up being a little too weird and horny for Universal, according to Cinefantastique, which covered the film's trek through development hell pretty extensively around the time of its release, and that version died as well.

It was apparently set in a present-day art museum that recreated the Tombs of the Pharaohs, but there isn't a whole lot more information than that in the article.

That was followed by a new version pitched by Alan Ormsby of Popcorn and Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things fame, which was also set in the present day and borrowed elements from The Terminator as well.

So for three, um, I remember it being the, I want to say

not Cinefantastique,

maybe it was, or Film Facts or Cinefacts.

Was there a magazine called Cinefacts? Does that ring a bell?

Cinefantastique existed.

Cinefantastique and then Film Facts.

One of those did basically like a 1984 issue came out in like May of And it was telling you everything that was going to be coming out to the end of the year from small, like two page articles to like five page.

Oh, that sounds really familiar.
