Officials said the latest victim, a man in his thirties from Chuo Ward in Chiba, the prefectural capital, died of carbon monoxide poisoning, possibly caused by a generator he had likely used during a power outage at his home caused by the torrential rain.

Chiba city officials are investigating if the death was disaster-related.

As of August sixteenth, the prefecture reported a total of one thousand four hundred ninety-nine homes had suffered either above-floor or below-floor flooding.

Triple monthly rainfall in hours.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported a historic three hundred forty-eight millimeters of rain in Chiba's Chuo Ward in the twelve hours to one forty AM on August fourteenth.

This is triple the area's average rainfall for the entire month of August, all falling in just half a day.

Other locations also set new twelve-hour rainfall records for August, including Sakura, two hundred thirty-five millimeters; Lebara, two hundred twenty-seven point five millimeters; and Tateyama, two hundred seven point five millimeters.

By six thirty AM on August fourteenth, the Land Ministry reported that four rivers in the prefecture had exceeded flood danger levels.

East Nippon Expressway Company closed sections of numerous expressways due to landslides.

Power outages also swept through the region, with TEPCO Power Grid Incorporated reporting more than twenty-two thousand affected households as of ten forty-nine AM, eighteen thousand of which were in Chiba's Chuo Ward.
