Chukar

Do you guys ever worry about any like disease or anything along the lines of that? Or have you guys had anything like that in the past? Do you know of?

Uh, there's been a few diseases that I can't remember off the top of my head that just like hit the radar screen, but we didn't see any indication of it happening in Chukar.

Okay.

Uh, so we never really tested for it.

And this was a master's thesis done out of Utah, and the guy that published it, his name's Jacob Barnes.

I'd never met him.

And the title of it, Spatial Ecology and Population Dynamics of Chukar.

And he did a really good job on it.

The

places that have it in the state are primarily for Upland Game, Pheasant, and Chukar.

Yeah.

Yeah.

But be flexible, you know, and I think this was one of those years that guys just kind of, they're in a good area.

I did a podcast with Scott Linden on Upland Nation, talking about the wildfire effects on Chukar habitat in the Great Basin, along with Michael Klein up in Oregon, because they've had a similar, they've had a worse fire year than we have.

And we talked about, he asked me kind of, what's my thought on, you know, Word of encouragement, and I told the guys, I said, you know, for my constituent hunting base here in Nevada, and a lot of these guys are flexible, they're knowledgeable, and they have good dogs, but I said, don't be afraid to move.

You know, don't dump your dog out on a landscape and hunt the whole day, four or five hours where I'm out.

Oh, and I know people are going to look at the forecast and just to kind of give them some context.

0.3 is quite a ways below 4.5, but the silver lining is there still were lots of birds in the sample.

Well, I think the thing to remember, too, Chukar and guys listening to the – outdoors men and women listening to the podcast, they know they're a boom and bust species.

They're not going to ride high forever.

Now, sage-grouse, it always opens on a Saturday.

But chukar, it's the 15th of September, and it is where it is.

So I prefer years like this when it opens during the middle of the week because there's just less people out there.

Birds are concentrated

to be a banner year it'll be Pretty average, I think, kind of getting back on

track for what's normal with Wyoming, which is good.

Would you say chukar is your favorite species to hunt? Yeah,

I definitely would say that.

I'm

not sure why, like I said, I'm not sure why he didn't include Chukar, but, but maybe they're not a plains bird.

They're more of a steep country bird.

Yeah, I don't take him as the steep country kind of guy.

Yeah.

And, uh, I was going to say, he also has a chapter in this pictorial saga about, um, you know, Mount different mountain species.

And one of them is obviously the, the Chukar partridge.

So he has written about him quite a bit in his different books, just not Western wings.

But

there are changes in Mountain Quail, Gamble's Quail, California Quail, Huns, and Chukar.

Oh, well, stay tuned.

Okay.

And so then also they've got some, they married the Huns and the Chukar, the structure together.

The two species are now together with a six bird daily limit or 18 bird possession limit.

Whereas, like, pheasant can be exquisite.

Chukar can be exquisite.

Duck can be exquisite.

But, man, you can...

Or my goal really is, I really want to hunt chukar out west.

I really, really want to hunt chukar out west.

But if you pick a particular like window and you're like, okay, well, if Chukar aren't great, I could also flex into Bob White or Scaled Quail.

I could head to the Southwest.

But, um, valley quill is where it's at.

And then there are, we can talk more about this in a little bit, but there are Hungarian partridge, um, And Chukar is pretty abundant if you know where to go.

And we're not far from like Hell's Canyon and Idaho, Oregon, where there's even more opportunity for Chukar.

But, but up here there's, There's a lot of chukar.

I see chukar in town all the time.
