I'm Joana Ferreira and today we're going to explore the role of compression therapy in chronic venous disease.

Chronic venous disease is one of the most prevalent vascular conditions worldwide, affecting 40% of the general population in its various forms, ranging from telangiectasis and varicose veins to the most advanced stage venous leg ulcers.

Despite this enormous clinical burden, one of our oldest and still one of the most effective therapeutic tools remains compression therapy, which is recommended by the 2022 ESVS guidelines to reduce symptoms across the different stages of the CAP classification.

To discuss this important topic, it is a great honor to welcome Professor Melina Vega de Sénega.

Seems like a lifetime ago, doesn't it?

Both are internationally recognized for developing the Climate Vulnerability Index, or CBI, a tool that has now been widely used to rapidly assess the effects of climate change on World Heritage sites, such as the Great Barrier Reef and the old and new towns of Edinburgh.

To date, the CVI assessment process has focused on World Heritage sites across Europe, Africa, and Australasia.

This is the first time a full CVI assessment will be undertaken with a World Heritage location.

Their latest collaboration led by Scottish Canals and in partnership with other agencies, is bringing together the local community and representatives of public bodies in a series of discussions to examine the future implications of climate change for the Crinan Canal in Argyll and Butte.

From there, it is planned to widen the focus to the entire canal network across the Highlands and Lowlands.

It is well known that the canals are important in driving tourism and economic regeneration, as well as playing a growing and important role in ecology, well-being, and active travel.

Just how much our landscapes and future management of climate change depend upon them, that's less widely appreciated, and these are among the topics of the research.

Once published, our CVI report will join a high-profile global library, creating a strong case for funding and policy focus on our heritage canals.
