And Pike, we find out, is on a landing party investigating a faint SOS.

But Mbenga says, don't worry, routine.

And Kirk is just wondering if La'an beamed down.

We then move to the moon's surface where Una, as part of that landing party, notes that they're headed into a crystal cave.

Uhura says they're going to lose comms upon passing through its threshold.

Pike checks in with Enterprise and says, we will be in touch soon.

If we are not in touch within an hour, you come reach out for us, etc.

Interestingly...

Anson Mount is the second actor to play both Batman and Christopher Pike from Star Trek.

Of course, the other actor being Bruce Greenwood, who played Pike in both Star Trek and again in Star Trek Into Darkness.

And he voiced Batman in Batman Under the Red Hood.

And so that showed me that there's great respect and admiration.

Finding their version of Captain Pike and Mr. Spock with comments from Anson Mount.

He's a dead ringer, man.

Look at this guy.

And so his command style, I guess, is... is sort of unknown to him.

And we'll see in episode one a little bit more of what it's like.

And you'll see that he's learned from Captain Pike and from Michael Burnham.

This episode combines my conversations with Ethan from New York Comic Con Before Discovery Season 2 and again at the start of Strange New World Season 2, capturing the evolution of an actor, finding his place within a legacy.

And in the final act, they'd come together and they could have had this group of Andorian smugglers or whatever be part of the Romulan plot.

and and and really do that and i'll be honest again the the romulan thing i can't help it i get these twinges and it's like all right you're fucking with canon again okay uh you know that that that oh you know and again they think they're adding to star trek lore when they do these scenes i think it cheapens it even and it was a throwaway scene but when um When Kirk and Spock are talking about how the Admiral is making Kirk his first officer, Pike is on this away mission.

Una is on this away mission.

He needs a first.

Okay, fine.

I need his first officer.

Pike's not here.

Una's not here.

They're making the show they want to make.

But at the same time, I didn't pick the premise of Captain Pike's crew.

I didn't name the show Strange New Worlds.

I didn't create the season four promo that said, you ready for some Strange New Worlds? So I don't think that I'm out of line by wanting a show about Captain Pike's crew to...

in the time before Captain Kirk exploring strange new worlds.

You know what I mean? Um, right.

I mean, as far as this episode goes, I mean, I thought it was fine.

Um, They got into some heavy stuff with Pike.

It has a lot of Star Trek vibes and themes involved.

But Pike was playing a background character in a B story.

Mm

hmm.

On the Enterprise itself, the primary character was a guest star, which was – this was a Kirk story.

So it's not a story about Pike and Una and Spock and La'an.

The person, if you look at the main cast, who gets the most attention – I don't even know if you could say attention – is Pike.

Uhura because it's kind of pays off her arc for the season.
