With regards to our judgment, have you seen any like amazing use cases of people trying these concepts out with allowing their students to struggle a little bit more?
11:05
Absolutely, and I think this is the core point of the AI Literacy and Action Lab.
11:10
That's a joint venture between the college and the libraries to actually give students hands-on experience with identifying where that judgment is coming into place in the use of AI tools, all wrapped around a practical set of activities.
11:31
I was recently reading an article on composition and computing in a professional journal where some researchers were looking at what specifically are the skills that can be learned, the capabilities that can be refined using artificial intelligence in the practice of writing.
11:58
And they examined, they took questions, sort of core features of higher learning recognized within the practical teaching of writing and identified places where AI can help a student get to one of those aha moments, to use some shorthand for that, and where it gets in the way.
12:21
And if you're avoiding the aha moment or you're so focused on the output that you don't appreciate the exercise, the flex of that muscle in a new capability, that's where AI is replacing the human agency.
12:42
We must, as higher ed leaders and as educators, do the work of pointing out for students where it's helping them and where it's getting in the way.

I'm curious, like, what is this sense that we have where everybody's feeling so behind the technology and we have this race? Is that like a false narrative that we're having? Where do you see students in your faculty showing up?
15:13
So what we're needing to do is swap over how we approach AI using this knowledge how do we analyze it how do we utilize it and these are the type of skills that aac and you talks about with critical thinking data analysis drawing conclusions etc to me that's how higher ed in an ai age and liberal arts needs to be more focused
15:44
Absolutely.
15:45
And so I think AI hasn't broken education.
15:50
It's just dissolved a substitute that we mistook for it.
15:54
And it's forcing out into the open a real question, and that is what is an education for? And you could see employers arriving at a similar place from the other direction.
16:07
So the World Economic Forum recently surveyed global chief people officers this year, and the top priority wasn't training people in specific skills.
16:19
It was redesigning the work itself.

So what are you doing at UVA that makes this so special for your students and your faculty, for that matter?
