Mark KennedyGUEST
There was that relationship where he was almost legendary, definitely legendary, almost mythical figure, you know.
Mark KennedyGUEST
But the mythical figures in Manchester weren't that hard to find because I was a big friend of Chris Seavey as well, who was Frank Sidebottom.
Mark KennedyGUEST
He was a very good friend of mine and he sadly left us now.
Mark KennedyGUEST
And then people like Wilson and these mythical figures were kind of, they weren't unobtainable friends, you know.
Jenny EclairHOST
Your time starts now.
Jenny EclairHOST
Oh, I mean, I love the look of it and I love the Frank Sidebottom-esque Gregg heads.
Jenny EclairHOST
yes but it was i couldn't get my head around it at all
Jack BernhardtHOST
so i think
Nina ContiGUEST
A very nice prop
Ed GambleHOST
... and the, the Frank Sidebottom side-
Nina ContiGUEST
Sidebottom Greg
Ed GambleHOST
... yeah, yeah.
Nina ContiGUEST
And don't we get a big sort of inflatable hammer-
Ed GambleHOST
[laughs]
Nina ContiGUEST
... and knock these Frank Sidebottoms in the head or what? It's like surely it's a bit more-
Ed GambleHOST
A bit more physical, a bit more fun-
DylanHOST
Well, my first gig was a little different.
DylanHOST
I think my very, very first gig would've been Frank Sidebottom when I was very young, but I don't know-
Phil ThompsonGUEST
Ah
DylanHOST
...
DylanHOST
I mean, it would've, that would've been crazy if it was-
Phil ThompsonGUEST
[laughs]
DylanHOST
... like five-year-old me being like, "No, do you know who I wanna go and see, guys? Take me to Frank Sidebottom."
Phil ThompsonGUEST
Take me to Frank Sidebottom.
Frank SkinnerHOST
I think that's what people do.
Frank SkinnerHOST
I wasn't offered the, uh, film about Frank Sidebottom or I might have, I might have thought about doing that.
Emily DeanHOST
No, but I'm starring in Forest of Dean.
Frank SkinnerHOST
Are you?
Matthew LaytonHOST
Um, some of his most notable works include The Psychopath Test, international bestseller; uh, The Men Who Stare at Goats, which was made into a 2009 feature film starring George Clooney and Ewan McGregor; and, uh, the podcast, which I have listened to a bit, Things Fell Apart, which explores the, uh, modern culture wars and the history behind them.
Matthew LaytonHOST
And of course, you, you will re- relate to his comedy drama, Frank, uh, inspired by the bit where he played in a band with Frank Sidebottom-
Steve PhillipsHOST
Oh
Matthew LaytonHOST
... him of the giant papier-mâché head
Steve PhillipsHOST
Oh, well, there you go.
Steve PhillipsHOST
What a guy.
Steve PhillipsHOST
Yeah, Frank Sidebottom was brilliant-
Matthew LaytonHOST
Yeah.
AndyGUEST
... thinking back to that time though, I mean, there were some great gigs that we ended up doing, and, um...
AndyGUEST
I mean, I, I particularly remember a couple of times we, we supported Frank Sidebottom, which was just...
AndyGUEST
Those nights were great.
TomGUEST
Mm.
David DedrickHOST
[laughs]
Ian BoothbyHOST
The best of the bunch, though, was Oink, a slightly edgier for older children with juvenile contributions from Charlie Brooker, a regular strip from paper mâché-headed entertainer, uh, Frank Sidebottom-
David DedrickHOST
Frank Sidebottom.
David DedrickHOST
I can't even ...
David DedrickHOST
Ah, love Frank Sidebottom
Ian BoothbyHOST
... and Jeremy Banks' leafily disgusting alien Burp.
David DedrickHOST
[laughs]
Ian BoothbyHOST
I'll add a link or two below.
Rob BeckettHOST
[laughs]
Josh WiddicombeHOST
Are you aware of Frank Sidebottom?
Nina ContiGUEST
I am, but I still haven't seen the film, and it felt adjacent, so I didn't wanna watch it in the run-up.
Josh WiddicombeHOST
Well, the film's fictional, but the, the story's really interesting, 'cause that is a situation where this guy basically is, um...
Josh WiddicombeHOST
He...
Josh WiddicombeHOST
Do you know Frank Sidebottom? He's got this big-
Rob BeckettHOST
Yeah, the big-
Josh WiddicombeHOST
... big head.
Rob BeckettHOST
[laughs]
Josh WiddicombeHOST
