On August 23rd, 2007, just three days before Surely You Joust aired, a product designer and early Twitter user named Chris Messina posted a suggestion.

Twitter itself was barely a year old, and people were still figuring out what exactly they were supposed to do with it.

There were no trending topics as we know them today, no Instagram, and absolutely nobody was sitting in a restaurant arranging their eggs benedict for a photograph captioned, Hashtag Sunday Funday.
