Uh, so yeah, it, it is like, I definitely agree that there's a saturated, like excess stuff, which is why, you know, things kind of go away, but also you have to like, do what you have to do to to get your imprint but yeah it's really fascinating to just see that the people that kind of just like keep steady yeah yeah i'm glad they do i'm glad they
Jacob GivensGUEST
30:50
do because because we need it to continue we don't want it to dry up and wither and go away it needs to come back and i i hope it does in a big way
AaronHOST
30:57
yeah the uh the last point just because you brought it as i've branded the other quality of a lot of music videos is just not there because they don't you know whether it's a rights thing or not there's just not an effort to kind of like upgrade these older videos which is a shame it is it's nice for now but even then these are still dvds but like there are those directors boxes i have one of them where it's like spike jones chris cunningham and oh cool i love andre's videos but there's like there's a lot of glazer and mark romanek and um anton corbin there's like a few of those ones and then of course there's the criterion Beastie Boys box set which I'm still waiting to get a Blu-ray upgrade on because it's fantastic to have that and you know that's a band that love making music videos but yeah preserving these things because they're just going to be like sitting in you know to what to 40 on B on, uh, on YouTube for the rest of your life.
AaronHOST
31:51
It's like, ah, it sucks.
GabeHOST

The video depicts abstract objects seeming to react algorithmically to the music, but Rutherford has clarified that it was all painstakingly and manually synchronized in Lightwave 3D, which explains why the video delayed the EP's release even further, as Sean mentioned.

In addition to the usual LP and CD releases, Ganscraft got a special CD-DVD edition that included the video for the title track, along with the videos for Second Bad Villable, directed by Chris Cunningham, of course, but re-edited, actually, from the original, and base cadet base cadet mix directed by jess scott hunter and edited by d.a slade um so gantz graph how did you feel about this this little ep maybe maybe sometimes overlooked little ep uh dan before this week and then how did you do kind of listening to it over and over again
DanHOST
11:45
Yeah, you know, I like this one.
DanHOST
11:48
I've always liked it.
Steven T. HanleyHOST
35:51

Steven T. HanleyHOST

And then Aphex Twin was there with Chris Cunningham, and I was wearing an Aphex Twin T- T-shirt, and then I remember Aphex Twin walking toward me with the Aphex Twin grin and just touched the logo on my T-shirt.
Steven T. HanleyHOST
36:13
And this sounds so stupid, but y- you know like in, in the movies when they have, like, the hand recognition patterns that you touch? It was like he unlocked something by touching my shirt, and it was just him coming out of the darkness like-
Kali MaloneGUEST
36:26
But he touched your heart.
Kali MaloneGUEST
36:34
[laughs]
Steven T. HanleyHOST
36:35
Like that.
Steven T. HanleyHOST
36:35

He also created avant-garde surreal visual accompanies for artists like Aphex Twin and Bjork.
speaker_3HOST
11:17
They really did.
speaker_2HOST
11:18
You had music video auteurs like Chris Cunningham taking a crack at it.
speaker_3HOST
11:22
Yeah, and Cunningham is known for his incredibly dark, visually arresting, almost disturbing style.
speaker_2HOST
11:28
Didn't he do those really creepy Aphex Twin videos?
Craig JohnsonHOST
14:28
And if you've never heard of Nightmares on Wax, by the way, their album Smoker's Delight is quite phenomenal.
Craig JohnsonHOST
14:35
Having worked on film scores and with pioneering music video directors like Chris Cunningham, the founders of Warp Records, Rob Mitchell and Steve Beckett, were keen to move into film production.
Craig JohnsonHOST
14:47
However, tragically, Rob passed away from cancer in 2001.
Craig JohnsonHOST
14:51
And so, a friend of the pair, Mark Herbert, came on board to help set up the film division, saying in a later interview, quote, I'd just set up a production company with a mate and it was all going well, but there was just something about Rob and Steve's vision.
Marc FernandezHOST

And, and then all the other fourth graders.
Marc FernandezHOST
3:42
And then later I saw the music video cause I got the Chris Cunningham DVD that you saw.
Marc FernandezHOST
3:52
And, um, And then I was like, oh, that's a good song.
Marc FernandezHOST
3:56
I wonder what ever happened to them.

45 MINS LATER

Jesse CastroHOST

Okay.
Jesse CastroHOST
48:42
Okay.
Marc FernandezHOST
48:44
Okay, well, the music video was directed by Chris Cunningham, who did Window Liquor for AFX Twin and All Is Full of Love by Bjork.
Jesse CastroHOST
48:54
And it was made by putting Beth in a tank of water to make her look like she's floating in an alleyway.
GabeHOST
5:27
This lasted maybe 15 minutes.
GabeHOST
5:29
The next section kind of had something that I would describe as squelchy spastic beats, kind of reminded me of that Rubber Johnny video by Chris Cunningham and RDJ.
GabeHOST
5:37
It was maybe at this point after an hour that I began to flag and just close my eyes and let the vibe wash over me.
GabeHOST
5:42
What I really remember after this lull was the introduction of synth voices that reminded me of Soundwave from the 80s Transformers cartoon showing my age.
