Cheyenne River

The Sioux bands rove in the country to the Mississippi.

About 47 miles above the Teton River, the Cheyenne River falls in from the southwest, 4,000 yards wide, is navigable to the Black Hills in which it takes its rise in the third range.

Several bands of Indians, but little known, rove on the heads of this and the River Platte and are stated to be as follows.

Cheyenne, 300 men.

They are the remnant of a nation once respectable in point of number, formerly resided on a branch of the Red River of Lake Winnipeg, which still bears their name.

Being oppressed by the Sioux, they removed to the west side of the Missouri, about 15 miles below the mouth of Warkun Creek, where they built and fortified a village.

But being pursued by their ancient enemies, the Sioux, they fled to the Black Hills, about the head of the Cheyenne River, where they wander in quest of the buffalo, having no fixed residence.

They do not cultivate.

It's part of a study on how water moves through part of the FM diversion.

Dye is being put into the river near the Cheyenne River Aqueduct, which carries the river over the stormwater diversion channel.

The dye will help officials better understand how water moves around the structure.

Diversion officials say the dye is non-toxic and environmentally safe and is not expected to impact people, fish, or wildlife.

The Indian Bureau at last agreed to locations far up the White River across the reservation boundary in Nebraska and established Red Cloud and Spotted Tail agencies.

Other agencies, chief among them Cheyenne River and Grand River, renamed Standing Rock in 1875, rose from the banks of the Missouri River to the east.

Not all the Indians settled on the Great Sioux Reservation.

A hard core of holdouts from 3,000 Sioux and 400 Cheyennes stubbornly resisted all overtures from the government.

It was an immensely thrilling and promising image.

The spring grass not only fattened the ponies of these Indians, but also set in motion the annual spring movement of their kinsmen from the agencies.

From Standing Rock, Cheyenne River, Red Cloud, and Spotted Tail agencies, parties headed for the Powder River country.

Besides the usual lure of a summer's hunt, this year they went in anger over the white people's attempt to seize the Black Hills and the government's ultimatum to abandon the unceded territory.

The width of each at the mouth is three hundred yards.

The Little Missouri though shallow, has a rapid current, and has its sources in the south, as also the following streams, Cane River, near the village of the Mandans, Cannonball River, Winnepenhu, Siwarzina, and Cheyenne River, which is navigable for four hundred miles.

A rapid and muddy stream, four hundred yards at the mouth, Teton River, and White River, so called on account of the color of its waters, which are unwholesome.
