Chesapeake

It was going to be Cornwallis, down in Yorktown.

Once the British realize that Washington and Rochambeau are headed for Cornwallis, they dispatch a fleet of warships from New York to intercept the French navy off the Chesapeake Bay.

On the 5th of September, 1781, the two fleets meet in the most epic naval battle of the war.

The French Admiral de Grasse maneuvers 36 ships of the line and about 3,000 troops into the Chesapeake, where he's met by a British naval force coming south from New York.

And this British naval force comes with 4,000 troops in an effort to relieve Cornwallis at Yorktown.

They will fight a standard 18th century fleet action.

They're pretty evenly matched, but a last-minute turn of the wind allows the French to fire off their broadsides without the British being able to fire off their broadsides.

And the result was a crippled British squadron and a successful French one.

Three-time Virginia State champion Jody Stahler, who wrestled for Wayne Martin at Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake.

Jody Stahler was one of the top high school wrestlers coming out of the country.

He spent his first two years at the University of North Carolina wrestling for coach Bill Lamb and placed sixth at the NCAA Championships at 126 pounds in 1992.

Our cabins were not the most comfortable, nor was the floor of the dining saloon too soft for some of our city men, but we slept soundly from one until four, took breakfast at five, and at eight were driving in the quiet, dignified streets of Philadelphia towards the Shickl.

Very cold weather had followed us, and the heavy northwester of the day previous retarded our progress across the Chesapeake from Frenchtown.

At Baltimore we took our luggage at once to the railroad station and went to the United States and Union Hotels, where for a dollar and a quarter each we had supper, bed, and breakfast, and went off, all in better spirits, for Cumberland, where, after a miserable dinner and supper combined, we packed into 14 stages, having paid nearly an average of two dollars each for extra luggage, 50 pounds being the regular allowance for each man.

This is where they're actually from here because they have to get fat all summer, and now they're ready.

They were kind of weird looking, but it was.

But apparently the blue crabs are starting to take over over there.

And I'm just laughing because, you know, I'd always heard about, well, you know, the crab population is really down here in the Chesapeake and there's limits on how much you can take and it's not doing great.

I'd never had a summer in which they said, oh, yeah, the blue crab crop is booming.
