Cheryl Araujo

It was based on a real case that echoes this one from events that transpired in March of 1983 in Bedford, Massachusetts.

A 21-year-old mom named Cheryl Araujo walked into a bar called Big Dan's to buy cigarettes and was gang raped while men in the bar watched.

Early reports said some of them even cheered.

Nobody called the police and there was a payphone just feet away.

Rape itself did, and had been a focus of prominent feminists since the mid-century.

And sensational cases like that of Cheryl Araujo, who was attacked on a pool table at Big Dan's Tavern in New Bedford, Massachusetts, had brought the concept of gang rape specifically to attention.

But the connection of that crime with campus culture didn't fully fuse until Earhart and Sandler.

When it did, the interest was both immediate and intense.

And someone locks the door.

It is telling the story of what happened to a woman named Cheryl Araujo.

She was 21 years old.

She lived in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
