You're absolutely right that the Russians have long used political propaganda and political warfare alongside military warfare to achieve their aims, and Vladimir Putin is obviously very schooled in this because of his KGB experience and training.

You are also correct that parties like the AFD, but I would also note the national rally in France and Chega in Portugal – as other examples of political parties that the Russians have tried and successfully infiltrated and wooed.

But the way you combat that is not to, as in Germany, isolate those parties and try to ignore that they're there.

It's to shine a light on them and to talk about them and to talk about those ties and what they actually mean for the well-being of democracies.

They don't go through these huge changes and sort of switch back immediately, right? Even if Trump passes away or exits the political scene or whatever, it's going to take several election, major election defeats for the current configuration of the Republican Party to moderate.

right it's not just gonna the gop is not just gonna snap back from its current maga configuration to kind of the traditional reignite liberal internationalist configuration we remember from 20 years ago and people like john mccain that's just not there those guys have been defeated and it's going to take a while for them to come back and so as long as one america's only two-party system which means as long as half of the american party system is isolationist, semi-authoritarian, highly skeptical of U.S. allies, not really interested in fighting for liberal democratic partners around the world, somewhat sympathetic to authoritarian states like Russia.

Yeah, I mean, if you're a U.S. ally, you're probably not going to trust us very much, right? And I wonder if the Trump people actually grasp that.

or if they even care, that it's going to take a generation to rebuild these relationships.
