A federal judge in Oklahoma handed a win to a Jewish charter school this week.

As State Impact Oklahoma's Beth Wallace reports, this would be the nation's first publicly funded religious school.

Earlier this year, a state board rejected the application for Ben Gamla Jewish Charter School, a virtual school providing religious education.

The board relied on a 2024 Oklahoma Supreme Court ruling for a similar case with a Catholic school.

Now, a judge says that rejection was discriminatory.

What were the big issues on education at the time?

Back then, well, when I was a staffer, we were just establishing charter schools and open enrollment.

So going out of your zip code, you know, for your whatever choice school you wanted.

And then back then we were establishing state standards and reading and math and social studies and science.

Here's what I find to be interesting.

I can't remember if I supported them or not during the period of time that I was mayor.

If I Simington had started talking about charter schools.

I know the Democratic Party was not big on them at the time and I was a Democratic mayor.

I think.

It's becoming closer, especially now that the state is working on a project that's been going on for four or five years, which is Charter Schools, which is adapting the international system within the public section, which is beautiful work, which is where I'm working now, I'm working with Charter Schools.

So what does it do, just to understand more?

Charter Schools is a project funded by the state, for state students, Almost 100% locals.

Charter School Grant Programs Congress first authorized the Charter School Program, CSP, in 1994, Title X, Part C of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, ESEA, as amended, 20 U.S.C., Section 8061, ETSEC 1994.

It most recently reauthorized the program in 2015 as part of the Every Student Succeeds Act, On March 14, 2022, the Department published a notice concerning proposed priorities, requirements, definitions, and grant selection criteria relating to the award of federal grants to applicants in CSP.

This proposal increases the federal footprint in the charter school sector by ignoring statute and adding to the list of requirements imposed on charter schools.

The new administration must take immediate steps to rescind the new requirements and lessen the federal restrictions on charter schools.

Civil rights data collection.

On December 13th, 2021, OCR published a notice concerning proposed revisions to OCR's Mandatory Civil Rights Data Collection in which it proposed to create and collect on a new non-binary sex category, in addition to the current male or female sex categories, and to retire data collection that indicates the number of high school-level interscholastic athletic sports in which only male and female students participate.

We started in 2000 with 120 kids.

A couple blocks down is the new campus, 1069 Joseph Avenue, where we have the middle school and the high school campus.

Tucson.Arizona Attorney General Chris Mayes announced that a former Tucson charter school director and others were indicted for allegedly stealing education dollars to pay for jewelry, trips to casinos and other extravagances.

Here's Wayne Shutsky again.

According to the indictment, former Academy del Sol Executive Director Jason Reigert, his wife Stacey Barton, and office manager Kimberly Richards are accused of misusing more than one hundred thousand dollars belonging to the school, including more than twenty-five thousand public education dollars from the state.

She's the founder of the Success Academy Charter Schools.

And she's talking about how in New York, the state education department has blocked US News and World Report from accessing data on the state's schools, including data on the AP tests.

This is sort of a back to school story, but what are the teachers in New York trying to hide, I guess is the question.

She got along with every mayor and right through Mike Bloomberg.

Bill de Blasio didn't sort of started picking fights with her.

He didn't like charter schools.

Why doesn't he like charter schools? Because the teachers union don't like charter schools.
