Charlie Shavers

[bass playing]Alvin Stoller on drums [drum solo].

Charlie Shavers on trumpet [trumpet solo].

And Flip Phillips on tenor saxophone [saxophone solo].

And that's not just a collection of studio musicians.

Without a dream in my heart.

But listen closely to the musicians.

There's a lot happening underneath that apparent simplicity, like Charlie Shavers' performance on the trumpet.

He adds another voice to the conversation, not a wall of sound [trumpet solo].

But first, a broadcast of The Tommy Dorsey Show, heard on NBC on August 4th, 1945.

[trumpet music] [audience applause] Hi, this is Tommy Dorsey with another Sunday evening rig, featuring Stuart Foster and the Sentimentalists, Buddy Rich, Charlie Shavers, and the rest of the members of the Dorsey Clabiash and Pinocle Club.

Our guest this PM is the lovely star of 20th Century Fox Pictures, the lush cherry blonde, Vivian Blaine.

[audience applause] Goodness, Tommy, do you always use those honeyed phrases when you talk?
