The Tilehurst End Podcast Episode 478: At Least £24

pretty much it
R

yeah i mean like i think the thing for me with this game and and obviously then like it bleeds on into the narrative for the next game um is that paddy lane is has just completely reinvented his career season i don't even know it's odd wasn't it because he spent pre-season playing in those fullback positions and i even had a dig at liam in like episodes I don't know the second or third episode of this season when he had been playing like Paddy on the on the wing position and I was still like very pro Dan Chihua and I think that if anything like Paddy Lane coming out coming back from the dead quite frankly shows that no one should think that Dan Chihua's Reading career is over just because he's not playing right now I think we don't think Charlie Savage's current Reading career is over just because he's not playing right now So, you know, Chihua may well come back.
R
10:05Ross WebberHOST
But I think for me, Lane was the quality difference in this particular game, right? I think Leighton Oren having a kind of like middling start to the season.
R
10:12Ross WebberHOST
I wouldn't be surprised if the Richie Wellens project is sort of reaching its natural end there, unfortunately.

lot of opportunities to do that over the next few weeks, starting with that trip to Plymouth, 12.30 kick-off on Saturday.
B
23:32Ben ThomasHOST
Just a brief kind of chat around the FA Cup draw.
B
23:36Ben ThomasHOST
So obviously we found out as we were on air that we were getting Peterborough away, so Savage v Savage.
B
23:42Ben ThomasHOST
That's been picked for TV coverage.

K
20:18KeelanHOST
No, Darren Ferguson was his usual grumpy self and didn't bring Tyler on.
K
20:23KeelanHOST
So I think there stands more of a chance that Charlie Savage comes on.
K
20:27KeelanHOST
You know, it'll be a strange occasion probably for Robbie, but you know.
K
20:31KeelanHOST
It'll be hopefully a good game for the TV cameras as well.

Yeah, it definitely has.

I think, you know, when you're a son of any of those names, you look at so many others, you know, Darren Ferguson, Charlie Savage, you'll have it in a few years, you know, trying to sort of emulate, you know, what the fathers have done before them.
C
49:05Craig PriestGUEST
And Brian was such a unique character, especially in Nottinghamshire as well.
C
49:09Craig PriestGUEST
So, yeah, Nigel always carried that weight of expectation, but...
The Lane Escape
A
25:17AlexHOST
He's your captain.
A
25:19AlexHOST
If you drop him, then how do you bring him back in, etc., etc.? ? However, I do think there still has to be some kind of an element of a conversation as to does Lewis Wing need to be on the pitch 90 minutes every single week when it's quite clear that actually sometimes you need to make a change in midfield and it doesn't need to be Josh Stokes for Randall Williams or Josh Stokes for Charlie Savage.
A
25:47AlexHOST
It doesn't make, they don't even make sense.
A
25:49AlexHOST
We're not making a like-for-like substitution, at least if Charlie Savage is coming off Lewis Wynn.
A
25:53AlexHOST
I can be like, well, it's not exactly the same, but I can kind of understand it.
A
26:00AlexHOST
Right now, we're making subs in central midfield, which makes just zero sense because of the refusal to remove Lewis Wynn.

B

So my thing is more the overall contribution.
B
15:25Ben ThomasHOST
on the pitch in terms of the um and this is going to sound really spoiled but in terms of the statistics and the ability that we've been used to in terms of his legacy but also when you're in a game like you are against Wigan where you're in the trenches a little bit it doesn't seem to be pulling people around him and going right do this do this do this and pulling the game by the scruff of his neck Look, I don't need to sit here and defend my position on Charlie Savage because I've done it for three years.
B
15:50Ben ThomasHOST
But what I would say, being as close to the pitch as I was in the Chelsea game, he was constantly talking to players.
B
15:58Ben ThomasHOST
He was constantly saying it's not good enough, it's too easy.
7 MINS LATER
B
22:59Ben ThomasHOST
That's wrong to say that because I was already pissed off.
B
23:02Ben ThomasHOST
But like, it blew my mind a little bit.
B
23:04Ben ThomasHOST
So, Andy Runamoto was booked on the 23rd minute, right? Difficult, difficult time, any time for a centre midfielder who puts tackles in to be booked then, let alone have to play what? you know 60 odd minutes or whatever for the rest of the game if you're playing the whole night need to not get a second yellow Scott Hogan scored on the 71st minute right Liam Richardson then took Andy Rinomoto off on the 77th minute and put Charlie Savage on now initially if you look at that stat straight away without looking at the time as you're thinking oh Rinomoto's been booked you know playing sensible but he played 50 minutes on a yellow card before he was taken off So what is the thinking there in terms of taking off Andy Rinomoto to put on Charlie Savage to leave Lewis Wing on at that time after they just scored? And there's still 20 minutes to play or whatever.
B
23:58Ben ThomasHOST
What's the thinking behind that? Because that doesn't make sense to me.

B
20:00Ben ThomasHOST
I thought the midfield, Fraser was pretty poor.
B
20:03Ben ThomasHOST
Savage tried to get the ball moving and create things.
B
20:06Ben ThomasHOST
But overall, it was just very, very stale.
B
20:10Ben ThomasHOST
It felt like we were doing all right in the first 15 minutes or so.
10 MINS LATER
B

Could this be a mid- to longer-term solution to find the goals in the aggregate money ball without Marriott?
R

And a second
B

question, Wing was better today, but could we ever envisage a set up where Ayrton returns to the 10 role and Stokes taking a role of deeper line playmaker if Savage is unavailable or an international break before Ben questions that? I will.
B
30:24Ben ThomasHOST
I will question it.

... of, of the month based on- You know, who wins or who shouts the loudest in the WhatsApp group, that kind of stuff.
B
36:39Ben ThomasHOST
I always say Charlie Savage every month.
B
36:40Ben ThomasHOST
No one ever listens to me.
B
36:42Ben ThomasHOST
Um, but it, it, it's interesting to look at it, and then obviously we need your votes to be able to make that work, and we- we've been doing all right with interaction recently on those votes.

And for whatever [laughs] reason, Bellamy chose to play Charlie Savage in midfield-
R
43:31Ryan MarchHOST
Mm
G
43:31Greg CaineHOST
... you know, a lightweight.
R
43:32Ryan MarchHOST
So we ain't got a problem with Charlie Savage, have you? [laughs]
G
43:34Greg CaineHOST
I don't.
G
43:34Greg CaineHOST
I think he's a lovely lad-
G
43:56Greg CaineHOST
The point I'm trying to make is that that Denmark game, we also did have chances, and I would argue a l- definitely one of the goals that went through Danny Ward's hand, right? So that's two Danny Ward mistakes.

And whether that's...
S
11:30StevenGUEST
Is that a risk that you would take because you don't know what it is that you're gonna get from Savage, say, who would replace him?
B
11:37Ben ThomasHOST
Mm.
S
11:38StevenGUEST
They're vastly different players that do vastly different things.
B
12:27Ben ThomasHOST
Liam Fraser, obviously wild card, but you, you got Shay Spence potentially to, to come into that mix as well.
S
12:33StevenGUEST
Mm-hmm.
B
12:33Ben ThomasHOST
Charlie Savage, who will probably end up at Peterborough in the next few weeks-
